Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER -- A day after allowing a season-high 18 runs, the Clearwater Threshers came back strong on Wednesday to top the Daytona Cubs, 6-3 in the series finale.
Jeb Stefan earned his first win after five strong innings in the start, and Jesus Posso belted his first home run in a Threshers uniform to help boost Clearwater to victory. All six of the Threshers' runs came across with two outs.
The Cubs (5-14) brought home the game's first run with two down in the first inning. With runners on second and third against Stefan (1-1), Dan Vogelbach singled through the right side to make it 1-0 Daytona.
The Threshers (4-15) were held scoreless by Cubs hurler Rob Zastryzny through the front four innings before mounting a two-out rally in the fifth.
Malquin Canelo, who had entered as a defensive replacement for shortstop Angelo Mora, got things going with a double off Zastryzny (1-1). Justin Parr followed by dropping a single into left to score Canelo with the tying run.
Brian Pointer rippped a base hit through the right side to set up men at the corners, and KC Serna followed suit with a liner over the head of second baseman Gioskar Amaya to plate Parr. Pete Lavin then made it a 4-1 ballgame by shooting a two-run triple to the left field corner, his second three-bagger of the season.
Posso, who was making his first start for the Threshers, extended the lead to 5-1 in the sixth. The 19-year old launched a 1-1 offering from reliever Michael Jensen over the wall in left-center for a solo home run.
The Threshers would fight to thwart the Cubs' comeback attempt in the eighth inning. Daytona opened the frame with four straight hits off reliever Lee Ridenhour, who had held the Cubs scoreless through his first two innings of relief. The last of those hits - an RBI single by Bijan Rademacher - brought Daytona to within two runs of the Threshers' lead.
With the tying run on base and nobody out, Clearwater called upon reliever Dan Child to settle things down. Child got Vogelbach to fly out to right, and Wilson Contreras bunted to move the runners to second and third with two outs. Rock Shoulder then drew a walk to load the bases.
Child ensured those runners would all be stranded, as he induced a groundout to third off the bat of Giuseppe Papaccio to end the inning.
Clearwater added some breathing room in the bottom half after Art Charles and Nick Ferdinand connected for back-to-back doubles, giving the Threshers a 6-3 advantage.
Child worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to lock down his first save of the year, getting Albert Almora to ground out to third to end the ballgame.
The Threshers will try to make it two in a row on Thursday, as they head to Dunedin to open a four-game series. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m., and the game can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:15 p.m.
Clearwater returns home on Friday for Bright House Networks Fan Appreciation Night, as well as Tampa Bay Times Family Night, with a post-game fireworks show to follow.
