Mavs Win Rubber Match

July 22, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

After failing to win a series against Modesto since 2006, the Mavs were able to finally break through in the rubber match, using strong pitching and another big home run by Jake Shaffer to lead to a 5-1 win Thursday night.

Both Anthony Vasquez and Modesto's Dan Houston were tough to crack early on, as neither team plated a run through three innings.

The Mavs changed that in the fourth, notching four straight hits to lead off the inning. Dennis Raben singled, went to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on an RBI single by Rich Poythress.

Johermyn Chavez followed with another single, bringing Jake Shaffer up to the plate. One night after falling a single shy of the cycle, Shaffer stayed hot, blasting a three-run homer to right field and put the Mavs up 4-0.

Kyle Seager led off the fifth with a single to extend his hitting streak to 28 games. Edilio Colina then sent a ground ball to third, but Joe Sander threw it away to put runners at the corners.

Two batters later, Poythress sent a sac fly to center to plate Seager and give the Mavs a 5-0 lead.

The offense went quiet from there on out, as Houston and Stephen Dodson retired 15 of the last 16 men to come to the plate. The Mavs didn't have a hit past the fifth, and the only base runner came via an error in the ninth.

Fortunately, the Mavs didn't need the extra offense. Vasquez (7-4) bounced back very nicely after a rough start last time out. The lefty allowed one run over 6.1 innings, giving up five hits. He struck out six and walked one.

The Nuts didn't score against Vasquez until the final pitch he threw, when Jimmy Cesario hit an RBI double in the seventh.

Modesto threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs and bringing the tying run to the plate.

Bobby LaFromboise induced a groundout by Sanders to end the inning. LaFromboise then retired the Nuts in order in the ninth, earning the first save of his career.

Houston (5-6) had a terrific night outside of the fourth. He lasted a season-high seven innings and allowed six hits. His previous season high in strikeouts was just six, but he shattered that with 10 whiffs on Thursday.

The Mavs will continue their road trip and see if they can repeat their success in San Jose from earlier this season when they face the Giants at 7 p.m. Friday night. Live coverage will begin at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
