San Jose Giants News Release
Drew Biery homered twice while Francisco Peguero and Johnny Monell each knocked out four hits to lead the San Jose Giants to a 17-1 thrashing of the Stockton Ports on Wednesday evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose finished the contest with 22 hits en route to securing their largest margin of victory in a game this season. The win snaps the Giants' five-game home losing streak and improves their overall record to 56-41.
Peguero (4-for-6, 2 2B, 3B, RBI, SB) finished a home run shy of the cycle while Monell (4-for-5, HR, 3 RBI) blasted his ninth homer of the season in the convincing win. Juan Perez (3-for-6, 2B), Jose Flores (3-for-4) and Joel Weeks (3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) added three hits apiece while Biery (2-for-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI) hit both of his home runs against former major leaguer Brett Tomko.
Eric Stolp (5-8) was credited with the victory after tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Stolp, who worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fifth to preserve a two-run lead, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one. Kyle Woodruff, in the first start of his three-year professional career, worked 4 1/3 innings without allowing a run.
Biery gave the Giants an early 1-0 lead when he belted a solo homer to deep left center field in the bottom of the second inning. In the fourth, James Simmons was hit by a pitch with one out before immediately scoring when the next batter, Peguero, clubbed a double into right center.
San Jose extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Monell and Flores each singled to begin the frame before Biery stepped to the plate with one out and launched a three-run homer down the left field line. The home run, Biery's 11th this season, pushed the advantage up to 5-0.
Tomko (0-1) suffered the loss for Stockton after yielding five runs (all earned) on 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings. The 37-year old right-hander, who owns 100 career major league wins, struck out three and walked none. Tomko hasn't pitched in the big leagues since September of 2009 after suffering from a pinched nerve in his throwing arm.
The Giants blew the game open with a six-run bottom of the sixth inning against Ports reliever Scott Hodsdon. Peguero started the inning with a triple into the right field corner before scoring on Ehire Adrianza's single through the hole on the right side. Consecutive singles from Perez and Monell produced another run before Flores drew a walk to load the bases. Hodsdon recovered to strikeout the next two hitters, Wendell Fairley and Biery, but then allowed an RBI single to Weeks making it 8-0. Simmons followed with a line drive double into the right center field gap plating Monell, Flores and Weeks for an 11-0 advantage.
San Jose continued to pour it on in the bottom of the seventh with four more runs. Perez began the rally by reaching on a passed ball after striking out swinging. After Monell walked and Flores singled to load the bases, Fairley bounced a single up the middle to score Perez. Consecutive passed balls charged to the catcher Yusuf Carter brought home the next two runs of the frame before Weeks smacked an RBI double to make it 15-0.
Facing Brandon Pinckney, a Stockton infielder, in the bottom of the eighth, Monell hit a two-run shot to deep center field for the Giants' 16th and 17th runs of the contest.
The Ports scored their only run of the night in the top of the ninth when Carter led off with a home run to deep left off of Edwin Quirarte. Quirarte, who entered the game to begin the top of the seventh, earned his sixth save of the year. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits over the final three innings.
Woodruff began his outing by retiring the first eight Stockton hitters that came to the plate. He didn't allow a hit until Grant Green led off the top of the fourth with a double. In the inning, the Ports loaded the bases with none out against Woodruff, however Carter popped out to first base before Tyler Ladendorf grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to keep San Jose ahead by a run.
Woodruff issued consecutive one-out walks in the top of the fifth to complete his evening as Stolp entered the game and after a two-out walk to Stephen Parker loaded the bases, the reliever set down Mike Spina on a ground out to end the threat.
Woodruff allowed only two hits during his stint on the mound. The Giants starter walked four and struck out three.
