The High Desert Mavericks and the Kansas City Royals have announced the 2005 Mavericks opening day roster highlighted by the Royals number one prospect Billy Butler, four of the top 11 prospects in the organization, and a total of four first round draft picks.*

Butler will head a Mavericks roster chock full of prospects for the 2005 season. Butler, a power-hitting third baseman, led the Royals organization in batting average and on base percentage in 2004 while hitting .376 with 10 home runs and 68 RBI for Rookie-level pioneer league, Idaho Falls. He also led the Pioneer League in hitting, RBI (68), and runs (74), while being named the Pioneer League Player of the Year.

Other Royals top-prospects joining Butler on the Mavs include the number four prospect in the Royals organization Chris Lubanski, OF, 9th prospect Mitch Maier, OF, 11th rated prospect J.P. Howell, LHP, number 14 prospect Leo Nunez, RHP, and the 22nd Royals prospect, Dusty Hughes, LHP.

Butler, Hughes, Howell, and Angel Sanchez, IF, will break camp a day later than the rest of the Mavericks roster as they will be up with the Royals major league team in Houston for an exhibition game against the Astros.

The 2005 Mavericks are managed by Billy Gardner Jr, the hitting coach is Boots Day, the pitching coach is Andy Hawkins, and the trainer is Steve Guadalupe.

The Mavs open up the '05 season at home against the Lancaster JetHawks at 7:05 PM on Thursday, April 7. Following the game will be a fireworks spectacular courtesy of Highway 395 Safety Coalition, "Don't Pass on Safety." Individual game tickets are on sale by stopping by the Mavs box office or calling the Mavs at 246-MAVS. Great seats are still available but going fast.
