Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks claimed their fourth victory of the season over the Quad City Mallards on Wednesday night with a 2-1 win on the road. Mavs' forward Obi Aduba locked in the game winning goal for Missouri in the third period to edge his former team.
Scoreless through a quiet first period, the Mavericks put their penalty killing unit to the test in the second twenty minutes of play, in 4 short-handed situations. But the Mavericks did not limit themselves to a defensive strategy on the PK, making several aggressive moves on the Quad City net while short-handed, allowing rookie Anders Franzon to put Missouri on the board first with a short-handed goal at the 4:05 mark of the second period (his third goal against the Mallards this season). John-Scott Dickson and Colten Hayes were credited with the assists on Franzon's ninth goal of the season.
Mavericks' goaltender Shane Owen made 35 saves to keep his team alive through a full 60 minutes of ice time allowing only one single effort goal by the Mallards' Jeff Lee late in the second period to tie the game 1-1.
It was then Obi Aduba, a former Quad City Mallard, who would strike midway through the third period to edge the home team 2-1 and steal the game for the Missouri Mavericks, aided by Evan Vossen and Jeff Buviow claiming his third assist as a Maverick.
Missouri played an aggressive game through the remainder of the third period, never holding back on their pursuit of the puck in a relentless effort to keep Quad City from tying up the scoreboard again. The Mavericks won the match in regulation 2-1.
The Mavericks play their next two games on the road in Denver against the second place Cutthroats. Missouri holds the top spot in the Central Hockey League with 66 points-6 points ahead of the Cutthroats in the standings. The puck will drop between these two teams on Friday, February 21st at 8:00pm CT and Saturday, February 22nd at 7:00pm CT. Mavericks fans can catch all the action at Strikerz Entertainment Center the Official Away Game Watch Party location of the Missouri Mavericks.
