INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Carter Verhaege- who finished the evening with two goals and one assist- and Dane Fox- who provided the game winner and an assist- scored vital third period go-ahead goals before the the host Missouri Mavericks (15-17-7) added two late empty netters to defeat the Quad City Mallards (20-17-2) 5-2 Saturday night.

The Mavericks were on the power play when Verhaeghe broke a 1-1 tie from the high slot at 4:07 of the third. After the Mallards' Michael Parks- who also picked up assist- evened the score at two from a tight angle at 9:27, Fox waited just 95 seconds before converting Dan Correale's cross-ice feed to put Missouri back on top for good.

Verhaege (at 18:45) and Radoslav Illo (at 19:50) added the empty net exclamation points.

The Mallards' Pavel Jenys ripped the opening goal from the right wing circle at 4:21 of the first period. Darren Nowick tied the game for Missouri by burying Andrew Courtney's centering pass at 9:52 of the first.

The Mallards and Mavericks meet again tomorrow in Missouri. The Mallards next play at home on Friday night, February 4 at 7:05 p.m. against the Rapid City Rush. Members of the Chicago Blackhawks Ice Crew will perform ice clean-up duties and meet fans during that contest. The Mallards' match-up with the Rush also brings the return of $2 Dog/$2 Beer Night presented by 97X. Fans can enjoy $2 hot dogs and beers from iWireless Center concession stands during every Friday Mallards home game. In addition, t he Mallards have once again this season partnered with Metro to provide transit service between Augustana College and downtown Moline during all Friday home games.
