Fuel Open Homestand with 4-1 Defeat to Toledo
January 21, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Indy Fuel News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Opening an extended six-games' home stand Friday night at Indiana Farmers Coliseum, the Indy Fuel bowed to the first- place Toledo Walleye, 4-1.
In the first game for both clubs since the ECHL's annual All-Star break, the Fuel fell behind early and could never quite climb back into the contest.
Toledo right wing Evan Rankin connected on the game's first goal just :16 into the game, establishing an early 1-0 lead which the Walleye never relinquished. It was Rankin's 100th career goal as the Toledo franchise all-time career goal-scoring cannoneer.
In the first of five meetings between the two Central Division rivals, the visitors surged into a 3-0 advantage by the 6:19 mark of the second period before the Fuel offered their only offense of the night at the 8:56 mark when All-Star left wing Alex Wideman fired his 13th goal of the campaign on a masterful arrangement from defenseman Robin Press who recorded his fourth assist in as many games for the Indy club. For Wideman, it was his 7th point over the last 6-games on 6(1-6-7).
Toledo outshot the Fuel 41-27, marking the 29th time in 39-games in which Indy has been outshot by the opposition. Fuel goaltender Jake Hildebrand was named the game's #3 Star, making 37-saves in the defeat.
The Fuel played the game severely depleted of manpower with their two top centers not in the lineup. Kevin Lynch was summoned to AHL Syracuse while Paul Zanette remained on the shelf with an injury. Head Coach Bernie John had to be resourceful, operating his bench with only 8-forwards as well as 8-defensemen.
After collecting 3-consecutive victories, the Fuel have dropped their last 2-starts as they await the invasion of archrival Cincinnati for a pair of games Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Face-off Saturday will be 7:35 pm on "Snowball Saturday Night," while Sunday's encore matinee presentation is set for 3:05pm on "Family Fun Day."
