Mavericks Re-Sign King and Vossen
Independence, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks announced Thursday the Central Hockey League (CHL) team has re-signed forwards Colt King and Evan Vossen for the 2013-14 season. The Mavericks are currently at 6 players signed to their pre-season roster.
King finished last season with 30 points (18-12=30) and 93 penalty minutes in 46 games played. King was voted Best Bodychecker, 3rd Best Fighter (Heavyweight) and 2nd Best Power Forward in the Best of the Best' poll as voted on by CHL players, coaches and operational staff from each CHL team.
King, 30 (3/4/83), is entering his tenth professional season and sixth in the CHL. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound forward was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the fourth round (#130 overall) of the 2001 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft. In total, he has played in 519 pro games in five different leagues and has accounted for 366 points (173-193=366) and 1,465 penalty minutes.
Prior to last season, the Thunder Bay, Ontario native played one season with the Sheffield Steelers in England. Before that, King played the previous four seasons in the CHL with the Rocky Mountain Rage and Rapid City Rush and was named the league's best power forward in three of those seasons. He won the Presidents' Cup with the Rush in 2010. King started his pro career in the ECHL with Augusta Lynx in 2004-05 and played his first two full seasons in the ECHL. In his third season, King went to Port Huron in the UHL where he had the first of four seasons in which he scored 20 or more goals. Overall, he has four seasons of 20-plus goals, four seasons of 40-plus points including a career high of 68 points with the Rush in 2008-09. King eclipsed 100 penalty minutes in 9 of his 10 pro seasons including a career high of 201 in 2006-07 with Port Huron.
"We are thrilled to bring this pair of players back to solidify our left side. Colt has the ability to dominate the game physically and is capable of making space for himself and his line mates in order to contribute offensively," Hillman said. "Vossen had a very solid rookie campaign. He proved to be a great shut down forward and penalty killer."
Vossen, 27 (9/12/86), finished his 2012-13 rookie season with 21 points (12-9=21) in 52 games. Prior to last season, Vossen played the previous five seasons at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. A native of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Vossen finished with 53 goals and 43 assists in 126 games with McGill. Prior to joining the Mavericks for the 2011-12 season, the 6-foot, 190-pound forward played in two games this season for the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL.
The Missouri Mavericks will host their fourth annual Fan Fest on Sat., Sept. 21 at Independence Events Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Mavericks will begin their fifth season of play in the CHL in October.
