LANCASTER, Calif. - The High Desert Mavericks rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and held on to defeat the Lancaster JetHawks, 5-3 on Saturday night at The Hangar.

After tossing a pair of shutout innings in relief, Trent Thornton walked Luke Tendler and Scott Heinemen to open the eighth.

Two batters later, Jose Trevino drove them both home with a two-run single. Tripp Martin later delivered an RBI single of his own to make it 5-2.

The JetHawks put their leadoff man on in the bottom of the ninth against Ryan Ledbetter when Drew Ferguson walked, but Jamie Ritchie grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Jason Martin followed with a long solo homer to right, but that 's as close as the JetHawks would come. Ledbetter recorded his second save in as many opportunities.

High Desert took the lead with a pair of solo homers in the second and fourth against Lancaster starter Josh James. Jairo Beras and Tripp Martin each went deep. James went five innings and struck out five, taking a no-decision. His ERA now sits at 2.97.

The JetHawks rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, out Garrett Stubbs and Ramon Laureano each singled to put runners on first and third. Drew Ferguson followed with an RBI ground out and Jamie Ritchie delivered a two-out RBI single to knot the game, 2-2.

Felix Carvallo (4-0) picked up the win with three shutout innings in relief, striking out four. Thornton (1-2) took the loss for the JetHawks.

Carvallo made a terrific defensive play on a Johnny Sewald bunt attempt up the first base line in the bottom of the seventh inning, fielding the ball with his glove and flipping to first base all in one motion. Sewald disagreed with the call and was ejected by base umpire Adrian Gonzalez. In the top of the seventh inning, Sewald made a phenomenal defensive play of his own with a diving catch in center field to rob Jose Cardona of extra bases.
