High Desert Mavericks News Release
ADELANTO, Calif. (SEPT. 14, 2012) - The High Desert Mavericks and the Seattle Mariners announced that they have agreed to a Player Development Contract for the 2013 and 2014 seasons, extending the partnership between the California League affiliate and major league club for a seventh and eighth year.
High Desert has been the Seattle Mariners advanced Class-A affiliate the last six years and has made the playoffs three of the last four seasons, including a run to the California League Championship Series in 2009. Main Street Baseball bought the Mavericks in 2010.
"The fans in the High Desert love a winner, and the Seattle Mariners consistently give the Mavericks a talented and competitive team that has made the playoffs nearly every year," said Mavericks owner Dave Heller. "We appreciate our close relationship with Mariners Director of Player Development Chris Gwynn and, while we never want to see players get hurt, we appreciate the Mariners' willingness to send us major league players on injury rehab assignments and give the people of the Victor Valley the chance to see current major leaguers in action alongside future big leaguers."
The Mavericks finished the 2012 regular season 83-57 overall - the best record in the 10-team California League. High Desert lost to the Lancaster JetHawks, three games to one, in the best-of-five California League South Division Final that concluded on Tuesday night.
In August, the Mavericks and the City of Adelanto signed a three-year lease with three one-year options that will keep the team at Mavericks Stadium through at least the 2015 season. The Mavericks have played at the same ballpark since 1991.
The Mariners announced on Thursday the renewals of player development contracts with four minor league affiliates, including High Desert, Double-A Jackson (Tenn.) in the Southern League, Class-A Clinton (Iowa) in the Midwest League and rookie-level Pulaski (Va.) in the Appalachian League.
"We are happy to continue our relationship with the great group of people associated with the each of our minor league affiliates for at least the next two years. It is terrific for our fans to have the opportunity to watch the future stars of the Seattle Mariners organization play before they reach the Major Leagues. My congratulations to all involved in helping this come together," Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President and General Manager Jack Zduriencik said in a team statement.
"We're delighted to renew our affiliation with all of our clubs," Mariners Director of Player Development Chris Gwynn said in a statement. "Each individual city and fan-base have always been great supporters of our minor leaguers and the entire Mariners organization and we're looking forward to continuing to bring them a great brand of baseball for years to come."
