Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI - The Missouri Mavericks were shutout for the first time in their 2015-16 season by the Allen Americans on Friday night in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals. The #4 Americans took a 1-0 lead in the Round 2 series with a 2-0 victory over the #1 Mavericks at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
The Allen Americans took an early lead in the opening frame, scoring just 1:10 after the first puck drop when Josh Robinson, was tripped up behind the Missouri net and Greger Hanson capitalized on the out of place goaltender. Tension palpably heightened on the ice and the long-time division rivals collected 18 penalty minutes (12-ALN, 6-MO) through the remainder of the period.
Despite being outshot 17-9 by the Mavs, Allen boosted their lead on the scoreboard 2-0 when Pierro-Zabotel found his way past the Mavericks defense in a power-play situation at 4:32 of the second period. The Mavs noticeably picked up the intensity in the final minutes of the frame, but were unable to beat net-minder Riley Gill in the crease.
Missouri outshot the Americans through the remainder of regulation with Robinson stopping all attempts by the visiting team, but the Mavs skated from the ice with their first shutout of the season and their first loss in their Kelly Cup Playoffs campaign.
Robinson made 25 saves through 58:19 between the pipes for Missouri.
The Mavericks will drop the puck in Game 2 against the Allen Americans at 7:05p.m. on Saturday evening at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. Tickets are available online at Ticketmaster.com and in-person at the arena box office.
