THE MATCHUP
The #2 South Carolina Stingrays open the Eastern Conference Semifinals series with the #6 Adirondack Thunder this evening. Both clubs are coming off 4-1 series victories in the opening round, with South Carolina beating #7 Kalamazoo and the Thunder topping #3 Manchester. The two teams met three times during the regular season with South Carolina posting a 1-1-1-0 record versus the Thunder. The Stingrays are the all-time ECHL leader in playoff victories and are tied for the most Kelly Cup Championships with three.
ROOKIE NETMINDERS SQUARE OFF
The series with Adirondack features a battle of two of the top rookie goalies in the ECHL. South Carolina's Vitek Vanecek is 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average in the postseason. He was a member of the ECHL All-Rookie Team and is a second round selection (39th overall) of the Washington Capitals in the 2014 NHL Draft. Adirondack's Ken Appleby, a New Jersey Devils prospect, went 4-1 in the opening round with a 1.75 goals-against average.
BENCH BOSS BATTLE
This series marks the return of former Stingrays forward and coach Cail MacLean to the Lowcountry. South Carolina Head Coach Spencer Carbery developed under MacLean, first as a player under MacLean's guidance as an Assistant Coach during the 2009 Kelly Cup Championship season, then as an Assistant Coach during MacLean's tenure as Head Coach.
BRINGING THE THUNDER ON THE ROAD
While the Stingrays have home-ice advantage, the Thunder are one of the ECHL's best teams on the road. Adirondack went 21-12-3 on the road during the regular season and are 3-0 thus far in the postseason away from the Glens Falls Civic Center. The club's penalty kill is a perfect 11-for-11 on the road during the playoffs.
JUST KEEP SHOOTING
Despite only playing five games in the opening round, the Stingrays are second in the ECHL during the playoffs, averaging 37.8 shots per game. In their own end, the Stingrays are allowing a playoff low 26 shots per game. The Thunder are averaging just 26.6 shots per game.
DEVIN CONTINUES TO SHINE
Joe Devin leads the Stingrays with seven points (five goals, two assists) in five postseason games. He has scored a goal in four straight postseason contests.
KELLY CUP EXPERIENCE
The Stingrays enter the playoffs with plenty of postseason experience. Six players of the Stingrays' roster were part of the team's run to the Kelly Cup Finals last season, including Derek DeBlois who finished third on the team with 29 points, and Joe Devin, who scored 13 goals in the playoffs. The club also has Bobby Shea on the roster who won a Kelly Cup in 2013 with the Reading Royals.
