Kansas City Mavericks News Release
The Missouri Mavericks (12-12-0-1) concluded their pre-Christmas three-game home stand with a hard fought shootout loss to the Quad City Mallards (13-9-3-2) on Monday night in front of a sold out crowd (5,800) at Independence Events Center. The SOL for the Mavs pulls them to within four points of the Wichita Thunder and Tulsa Oilers for third place in the Central Division of the ECHL (Missouri has four games in hand on Tulsa and two games in hand on Wichita). The win for the Mallards gives them sole possession of second place in the division.
The shootout loss for Missouri is the first in extra time this season putting the Mavs 2-0 in games decided in overtime and now, 1-1 in shootout games. Quad City improves to 4-2 in games decided in a shootout.
Missouri had been unblemished in the close ones entering Monday's game as the lone ECHL team without a loss of some kind in a one-goal game. With the shootout loss, the Mavs now fall to 7-0-0-1 in games decided by one goal.
Things got off to a solid start for Missouri as they outshot the visitors 10-6 in the opening 20 minutes and Evan Vossen scored the period's lone goal at the 4:20 mark, assisted by Martin Lee and Chris Crane. The score for Vossen was his third of the season and first since November 9 against Wichita.
The Mallards would rebound in the second period scoring back-to-back goals just 40 seconds apart. The first came on the power play off the stick of Logan Nelson, his fifth goal of the season, and the second came even strength when Todd Fiddler scored his fifth goal of the season giving his team a 2-1 lead.
Missouri would answer just over three minutes later with a power play goal of their own. Josh Brittain would earn the tying goal scoring his eighth goal of the season, assisted by Jack Downing and David Rutherford, at the 8:44 mark of the middle frame.
At the 10:16 mark of the third period, Quad City's Joe Perry would give his team the lead once again scoring his team-leading 14th goal of the season.
Their joy was short-lived as just 43 seconds later, Andrew Courtney would tie the game once again with his ninth goal of the season. Alex Lepkowski and Brittain earned the assists.
The game remained tied into the shootout where Missouri had a 2-1 lead through two rounds with scores from Brittain and Rutherford but Perry scored in the fourth round and Jeff Lee earned the deciding goal in the sixth round giving the Mallards the win and the extra point.
Maxime Lagace made 16 saves seeing his record fall to 4-2-0-1 and Evan Mosher improved to 5-5-2-1 making 30 stops in the contest. Missouri outshot the Mallards 33-20 and are now 8-4-0-1 when outshooting the opposition.
Missouri travels to Rapid City for games on Friday and Saturday against the Rush. Face-off for both contests is scheduled for 8:05 PM (CST).
