Mavericks Dinged in OT by Americans

Kansas City Mavericks News Release

ALLEN, Texas - The Missouri Mavericks battled the Mountain Division-leading Allen Americans for 60-plus minutes on Sunday afternoon, but came up just shy in a 4-3 overtime loss at Allen Event Center. The trip to overtime gave the Mavericks their first standings point of their current four-game road trip, but the loss moved their record to 13-17-6.

In their past three games the Mavericks found themselves down early and forced to play in comeback mode. Today in Allen, though, they flipped the script, scored the first two and held control over the Americans early. Carter Verhaeghe, who had two goals and an assist the night prior in Wichita, stayed hot with a breakaway goal 5:42 into the game and staked the Mavericks to a 1-0 lead. A little less than five minutes later, Dan Correale and Dane Fox set up Darren Nowick's 12th goal of the year, which gave the Mavericks a two-goal cushion.

That lead was short lived, however, as Allen's Joel Chouinard scored just 15 seconds after Nowick to put the Americans on the board. That goal swung momentum in the home team's favor as Derek Mathers and Chad Costello followed with markers 54 seconds apart that put Allen ahead 3-2 headed into intermission.

The Mavericks peppered Allen goalie Jamie Murray with 19 shots in the first and the barrage continued in the second period. Fourteen shots in the middle frame produced multiple quality scoring opportunities and, ultimately, the tying goal. Kyle Schempp nearly evened things with a backhander from the slot, but Murray made a diving stick save to keep it out. At the other end Missouri's Josh Robinson stretched post-to-post for a pad save on Zach Hall and allowed for the tying goal to come.

Shawn Pauly tied up the Allen defense with his forecheck and the puck popped loose to Jacob Doty alone in front. He was able to squeeze a shot through Murray's legs for his fourth of the season at 11:03 of the second. The Mavericks had a good chance late in the period to pull ahead, but Fox's one-timer was stoned by a Murray pad save.

Missouri carried play for long stretches in the third period, but more strong goaltending by Murray kept the game deadlocked. The Mavericks' best chance to end it in regulation came on a 4-on-3 power play just past the midway point of the period. Nowick appeared to have scored the go-ahead goal, but play was blown dead as the officials lost sight of the puck in a goalmouth scramble.

Rocco Carzo had a chance to end the game on the first shift of overtime, but Murray slid across to collect the shot after leaving a rebound above the crease. After a missed shot by the Mavericks, Costello collected the loose puck for a breakaway and scored five hole to end it 1:10 into the extra frame.

Robinson stopped 26 of the 30 shots that he faced on the night. The Mavericks went 0-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
