Kansas City Mavericks News Release
ALLEN, TEXAS - The Missouri Mavericks rallied in the third period to comeback from a 2-0 deficit in Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals of the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs on Friday night, but were ultimately outdone 4-2 by the Allen Americans, who now hold a 3-1 series lead over the Mavs.
"It was a good battle. They scored on a lucky bounce," said Richard Matvichuk, Head Coach & Director of Hockey Operations for the Missouri Mavericks. "We have to look ahead and get ready for Sunday. We found ways to win all season and we aren't going to stop now."
The Missouri Mavericks will have to win out the remainder of the Round 2 best-of-seven series in order to advance to the Western Conference Finals, beginning with a must-win Game 5 on Sunday, May 8 (4:05p.m.) at Allen Event Center.
The Allen Americans had to work for it, but took a 2-0 lead over the Missouri Mavericks by the end of the second period, scoring in each of the first two frames at the 14:29 mark of the period. Vincent Arseneau beat Mavs goaltender Josh Robinson, unassisted, for the opening goal, and Gary Steffes doubled the Allen lead with a big blast set up by Thomas Carr and Chad Costello.
The Mavericks made their move quickly in the third period, with Tyler Barnes scoring his fifth goal of the playoffs just 11 seconds from the initial puck drop to cut into the Americans' lead. Darian Dziurzynski and Carter Verhaeghe assisted on the play.
Then Ross Johnston, who became the first player in team history to make an NHL debut just twenty-six days ago, tied the game up 2-2 at 3:26 of the final frame. Defenseman Bryce Aneloski was credited with the lone assist on Johnston's tally.
Spencer Asuchak found his way onto the score sheet at 13:16 when a lucky bounce took the puck past Robinson for a 3-2 Americans lead. The Mavericks pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker in the final minutes of regulation, which gave Arseneau the opportunity to put away an empty-net tally and give Allen a 4-2 scoreboard, which they would carry through to the final horn.
The Missouri Mavericks will play the Allen Americans in Game 5 of the Western Conference Semifinals on Sunday, May 8 at Allen Event Center. Puck drop is set for 4:05p.m. Fans are invited to watch all the action at the Missouri Mavericks official Round 2 away game watch party locations: The Blue Line (Kansas City, MO) and Rock & Brews (Overland Park, KS).
