INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Mavericks are off to a good start for their back-to-back matchups against the Arizona Sundogs this weekend, taking the first of two games 3-2 in regulation.

After a touching ceremony put on to honor the 19 firefighters who lost their lives this past summer while battling a blaze in Arizona, another battle began. Even before the first puck drop, tensions on the ice were high around the center faceoff circle, and a mere 16 seconds into the game, the first of many penalties was called. By the end of the first 20 minute period, the teams had tallied almost 30 penalty minutes between them.

The Mavericks were first on the board with a goal by right wing, Trevor Kell, in his second season with Missouri. Given plenty of 4 on 4 and power play opportunity, the Mavericks could not take advantage of the short-handed Sundogs, but Andrew Courtney doubled his team's efforts before the buzzer signaled the end of the first, to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.

Less than 2 minutes into the second period, Mavericks' forward, John-Scott Dickson, widened the gap once more for a 3-0 Missouri lead. Perhaps it was a false sense of security that allowed the Sundogs to strike when they did, but a power play opportunity did not hurt their odds either. The Sundogs found their way onto the score sheet just over midway through the second period with a power play goal by Justin Pender and another goal by Sebastian Geoffrion before 40 minutes had expired.

It looked like Arizona was in a good place for a comeback when former Sundog, Kyle Hood, was send to the box, for the fourth time of the night, early in the third, but the Mavericks held strong in their penalty kill and pushed against Arizona efforts.

In the end Shane Owen, originally the backup goaltender for the evening, made 20 saves on the night, including a couple big saves in moments where his teammates defensive efforts had left him vulnerable. It was an impressive night for Owen, who now claims a 2-0 start to his Mavericks career.

Mavericks win 3-2 in regulation over the Arizona Sundogs. Sundogs led Mavericks 27-25 in shots on goal.

The Mavericks will face the Sundogs again on Saturday night in Arizona, puck drops at 9:05pm (CST).

The Mavericks play their first home game on November 2. Individual tickets and Season tickets are on sale now. With season tickets starting at just over $11 per game and FREE parking, the Mavericks are the pinnacle of family affordable entertainment.
