INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks took 2 points away from their Tuesday night matchup against the Rapid City Rush in their final regular season contest. The Mavericks topped the Rush 5-4 in a shootout decision to claim the season series over Rapid City 5-3.

The Mavericks were first on the board in the opening period with the near-unstoppable line of Sebastien Thinel, Eric Castonguay, and Andrew Courtney. Castonguay tallied the point, with helpers credited to Thinel and Courtney to open the scoreboard 1-0 Mavs.

There was no doubt that the number one special teams lineup would succeed against the bottom ranked power play and penalty killing unit in the league. Missouri halted all 4 of Rapid City's man-advantaged situations and capitalized on their only power play with a goal from Mathieu Gagnon (his second of the season), assisted by John-Scott Dickson and Colt King to raise up the Mavs' lead 2-0 at the end of the first.

Defenseman Dave Pszenyczny extended the Mavericks lead to 3-0 at 2:42 of the second period. The Rush would finally find their way onto the board in the second half of the frame as Anthony Perdicaro and Sean Erickson tallied 2 unanswered goals to come within 1 goal of the Mavericks leading 3-2.

Missouri put up only 3 shots on goal in the second period, and made a point in the third to quickly run up their chances. Despite their aggressive play, the Mavericks allowed the Rush to score twice and take the lead 4-3 before 10 minutes had passed in the third period. Goaltender Shane Owen was pulled in the final minute for the extra attacker and Colt King became the hero of the night when he tied the game up for the trailing Mavericks 4-4 in the last 45 seconds of the game to send the match to overtime.

When 5 minutes of overtime hockey could not yield a winner, the game decision moved to the shootout and the Mavericks, 2-1 on the shootout, quickly prepared to face the Rush, 8-1 on the shootout, in a skills contest. John-Scott Dickson and Andrew Courtney each got a puck past Wayne Savage to win the game for the Mavericks 5-4.

The Mavericks play their next game at home on Friday, March 21st at 7:05pm against the Quad City Mallards. Playoff tickets go on sale Thursday, March 13th at 10:00am! Purchase your first round playoff tickets online at TicketMaster.com or in person at the Silverstien Eye Centers Box Office.
