Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Quad City Mallards shut out the Missouri Mavericks, 2-0, Friday night in front of a sellout crowd at Independence Events Center. Mallards' goaltender Jimmy Spratt stopped all 26 shots he faced as Quad City handed the Mavericks their third shutout loss of the season. Obi Aduba and Matt Duffy provided the offense for the Mallards who improved to 7-7-3 on the season. Missouri goaltender Mathieu Corbeil stopped 15 of 17 shots as he had his two-game win streak come to an end. The Mavericks and Mallards will battle again Saturday night in Quad City at 7:05 p.m.
The Mavericks came out early in the first period with a couple quality scoring chances, but were unable to score the opening goal. Mallards' forward Obi Aduba split the Mavericks' defense and lifted a shot over the shoulder of goaltender Mathieu Corbeil to give the Mallards at 1-0 lead at 6:14 of the opening period. He was assisted by Patrik Levesque and Matt Duffy, and the goal proved to hold up for the remainder of the first period.
Missouri nearly doubled the Mallards in shots in the second period, but again goaltender Jimmy Spratt held the Mavs off the scoreboard. Missouri had nine shots compared to just five for Quad City, but the Mallards clung to the 1-0 lead.
Just over five minutes into the final period, Mavericks' forward Brian Bicek was awarded a penalty shot after he was hooked from behind on a breakaway chance. Spratt turned aside the penalty shot and kept his shutout bid alive. The Mavericks had a handful more of quality opportunities, but their chances diminished after Duffy gave Quad City a 2-0 lead with 2:26 remaining in regulation.
Missouri finished 0-for-5 on the power play, but the Mavericks killed all three of the Mallards' opportunities.
The Mavericks return home on Saturday, December 8 and they will host Quad City again. The first 2,500 fans in the door will receive a free puck courtesy of Santa Fe Glass. Tickets on are sale via Ticketmaster.com, by calling (800) 745-3000 or heading to the Silverstein Eye Centers Box Office. Parking is always free at Independence Events Center.
