ANCHORAGE, AK - Kick-started by 2 first period goals by Josh Holmstrom, the Missouri Mavericks got into the win column with a 3-0 shutout of the Alaska Aces Saturday night at the Sullivan Arena.
Holmstrom struck first at 5:48 of the first, batting in a rebound of a Colin Markison shot past Alaska netminder Steven Summerhays. He did it again at 9:46, swatting out of mid-air a centering pass from Markison that clipped an Aces defender's stick into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Jesse Root scored his second goal of the season 4 minutes into the second period, and the rest of the job was completed by goaltender Josh Robinson, who stopped all 25 aces shots he faced.
Summerhays finished with 27 saves in his first start of the season on a night where the Aces were a bit flat after a spirited 3-1 victory the previous night against the Mavericks.
Missouri finished 0-6 on the power play...Alaska 0-2.
The Aces and Mavericks will meet again Sunday afternoon at 3:05 Alaska time in the series finale.
