Kalamazoo Wings News Release

KALAMAZOO, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings were shouldered by goaltender Joel Martin, but were unable to generate enough offense to overcome the Fort Wayne Komets during a 3-1 loss on Saturday night at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

Kalamazoo took the lead early in the opening period while operating on their first man-advantage opportunity of the contest. Adam Phillips (1st) one-timed a Steve McCarthy feed past Fort Wayne goaltender, Pat Nagle, giving the Wings a 1-0 edge.

The Komets wouldn't need long to even the score, as Peter Sivak (1st) tallied just two minutes and twenty-seven seconds later, in the midst of a four-on-four, tying the game at 1-1.

With the end of the first nearing, the Komets upped the attack and were able to create a 2-1 lead when Trevor Cheek (2nd) fired a wrist-shot that beat Martin over his stick-side shoulder.

Even with a myriad of chances towards the end of the second period, the Wings were unable to find the back of the goal as Nagle came up with a series of acrobatic saves to preserve Fort Wayne's one-goal lead.

With time ticking off in the third period, Kalamazoo pulled Martin in favor of the extra attacker, but it would be Fort Wayne who would benefit. Drew Daniels stole the puck away from the Kalamazoo attack and fed Shawn Szydlowski (2nd) who finished into the empty net to cap off the Komets' victory.
