Matos Strikes Out Eight In Loss

HARLINGEN - Despite striking out eight batters in six innings, Miguel Matos (2-3) gave up five runs in six innings as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings fell to the Amarillo Dillas 7-3 Saturday at Harlingen Field.
The Dillas (28-21) got on the board right away. Adam de la Garza drew a leadoff six-pitch walk and Joaquin Rodriguez drew a ten-pitch walk. Two outs later, Stephen Douglas hit an RBI-double to make it 1-0.
Rob Recuenco led off the top of the second with an infield single, moved to second on a one-out walk and scored on a two-out single by Rodriguez to make it 2-0.
Recuenco led off the top of the fourth with a double and scored on a single by Sam Palace to make it 3-0.
Alberto Cruz hit a two-run home run, his ninth of the season, to make it 5-0 in the top of the fifth.
The WhiteWings (19-28) responded against Ralph Roberts (4-2) in the bottom of the fifth. Domenic Di Ricco led off with a double and Roberto Rodriguez hit an RBI-double. A groundout moved Rodriguez to third and Kevin Griffin grounded out to drive in Rodriguez, making it 5-2.
Eric Gonzalez hit a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth and scored on a double by Welinson Baez to make it 5-3.
That was it against Roberts, who allowed five hits and four walks while striking out four in six innings.
The Dillas added a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh. With runners at first and third and one out, Cruz hit a hot shot off of Gonzalez at third to score a run. One out later, Palace hit an RBI-single to make it 7-3.
The first two batters reached for the WhiteWings in the bottom of the ninth against Chris Nyman, but Ramon Geronimo recorded the final two outs for his 11th save.
The WhiteWings and Dillas play game two of this four game series Sunday at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05. Right-hander David Cross (2-5) is expected to face left-hander Ronald Lowe (4-2).
