\'Runners Lose Despite Four Run First Inning

LAREDO, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners could not add any more runs after a four run first inning and lost 6-4 to the Laredo Broncos Saturday night at Veterans Field.

The Roadrunners (31-15) got the scoring started in the first against Robert Roth. Wilmer Pino led off with a walk then stole second base. Felix Molina dropped down a bunt on the third base side but a throwing error allowed Pino to score. Wilson Batista reached on an infield single that put runners on first and third for Ambiorix Concepcion who hit his seventh home run of the season giving Edinburg the 4-0 lead.

Laredo (23-27) answered with a run in the bottom of the first against Edinburg starter Tim Haines (4-4) after a throwing error allowed Jason Diaz to score from third making it 4-1 Roadrunners.

Nick Mahin started the bottom of the second with a single then moved to second on a ground out by D.J. Dixon. Diaz then singled to center that allowed Mahin to score cutting the Roadrunners lead in half 4-2.

The Broncos tied the game at four in the bottom of the fifth with Salvador Paniagua's 14th home run of the season.

Brian Buchanan (5-2) picked up the win after relieving Roth in the top of the seventh and working a scoreless inning.

A throwing error by the Roadrunners defense in the bottom of the seventh allowed Diaz to score from second giving Laredo the 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Broncos added an insurance run with Dixon's first home run of the season extending their lead 6-4.

Maximinio De La Cruz worked a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season and giving Laredo the 6-4 victory.

The Roadrunners and Broncos will play their second game of this four-game series Sunday night at Veterans Field. Mike Reeves (4-2) is expected to face Jeff Jamnik (1-1) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
