Broncos Sign Former First Round Draft Pick

RHP Wade Townsend (6-4, 230), signed by the Broncos back on June 16th, 2010 and placed on the inactive list, has been activated and will be in uniform for tonight's series opener against the Edinburg Road Runners.

Townsend attended Rice University where he accumulated a 23-3 record from 2002-2004 and was named to the all decade college team. Townsend won a College World Series Championship in 2003 and was named to the 1st team all-American squad in 2003 and 2004.

Originally drafted in the first round (8th overall) by the Baltimore orioles in the 2004 player draft, Townsend did not sign. The Tampa Bay Rays then selected him in the first round (8th overall) of the 2005 player draft. After spending his first season with the Hudson Valley Renegade in the New York Penn League, Townsend underwent Tommy John surgery in 2006 and missed the entire season. He then spent the next three seasons in the Rays organization, reaching as high as AA.

In four years of professional baseball Townsend has a record of 7-21 with an ERA of 5.59 in 211.1 innings pitched he has allowed 145 runs (131 earned) and struck out 184 batters.

To free up a roster spot for Townsend the Broncs have released OF David Fowler. Fowler was hitting .244, going 29 for 119 with 54 strikeouts to 8 walks and only 10 RBI in 2010 for the Broncos.
