In the first regular-season meeting, San Diego came back from being down two goals in the 80th minute to tie the game with Taylor Kornieck scoring both goals for the Wave. Nearly three months later on Aug. 27, San Diego defeated Portland 2-0 on Thorns turf at Providence Park with goals from defender Kristen McNabb and forward Alex Morgan in the first half.
The teams met once again in 2022 for the NWSL semifinals where midfielder Taylor Kornieck put the Wave on the board in the eighth minute, but Portland equalized in the 20th minute. Portland would secure the win when the Thorns scored in the 93rd minute off of a corner to earn a spot in the NWSL Championship.

Meanwhile, San Diego Wave brought home three points from this past Saturday's road match against the Houston Dash at Shell Energy Stadium. The Wave took a 3-0 win, which marked the team's third clean sheet of the season. The Wave's opening goal came from Morgan in the second minute of the game, which marked the U.S. Women's National Team star's fastest goal of her NWSL career. Midfielder Sierra Enge followed up in the 58th minute scoring the second goal of the night and her first NWSL goal. Nearing the end of the game, defender Madison Pogarch fired a shot in the 79th minute right at the edge of the box to also score her first goal of her NWSL career.
