Match Preview: San Antonio Scorpions vs Ottawa Fury

October 3, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
San Antonio Scorpions News Release

The Scorpions set a mark for success on the road with last week's 1-0 victory over the Silverbacks in Atlanta. They now have accumulated 22 points away from Toyota Field in 2014, surpassing the road tally of 20 from the inaugural 2012 season. The win was also San Antonio's 13th in NASL play this year, tying the team record - also set in 2012 - and they are just five points shy of that season's team record for overall points (47).

Cesar Elizondo scored the lone goal in last weekend's match, just reward for the work he and Billy Forbes put in attacking on the Scorpions' left side. But the defense led by Adrian Cann and goalkeeper Josh Saunders had standout performances on the way to posting the team's ninth shutout of the season, which sealed the crucial three points. Atlanta took 13 shots in the match, but only three of those were on target and Saunders was up to the task on each.

This will be the first visit by the expansion Fury to Toyota Field as the two previous meetings between the teams took place in Ottawa, with the Scorpions taking four points from those matches. With a win over the Fury and losses by Tampa Bay and Ft. Lauderdale in their games this weekend, the Scorpions would officially clinch their place in the NASL postseason. San Antonio still would have plenty to play for in the remaining four games as home field advantage in the semifinals and final of The Championship will still be on the line.

Ottawa gave league-leading Minnesota all they could handle last Saturday as the teams were tied 2-2 going into the 88 th minute of the match when Christian Ramirez scored to give United the win. The Fury are coming off of a Wednesday night game - a 2-0 win over the Atlanta Silverbacks in Ottawa - so their training time has been limited, but the Canadian side has also fared better on the road this year as they've earned more points away from home than in Ottawa.
