Minnesota United FC News Release
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Friday, October 3rd, 2014) -- Minnesota United (8W-3T-1L, 27pts) returns home Saturday after a two-match road stint, from which the Loons grabbed all six points including a crucial three points against San Antonio. United now leads both the NASL Combined and Fall Tables and controls its own destiny heading into the postseason. This weekend, United looks to extend its twelve game home unbeaten streak and three match winning streak when it faces the Atlanta Silverbacks (3W-2T-8L, 11pts) in front of a home crowd at the National Sports Center Stadium as part of College Night presented by Wells Fargo. The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT. Fans can watch all the action live via NASLLive.com or ESPN3 as part of the NASL Match of the Week.
"We certainly had a great result last week in Ottawa," said Minnesota United Head Coach Manny Lagos. "They were a great team and in really good form and they really pushed us. This week was about working on some of the things that Ottawa challenged us with, which we didn't handle quite as well as we could have. Addressing those issues is important this week."
The match this weekend consists of two teams with very different records playing with very different aspirations. The first place Loons are ten points from clinching homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. United hasn't lost in nearly a year at home (11 matches unbeaten), and has looked unstoppable at NSC this season, scoring 21 goals and conceding just 9 goals in front of the Loon Army in Minnesota.
"Atlanta has not been in great form, but has dangerous players and a legacy of playing very well against us," said Lagos. "They were the Spring Champion last year and they have always given us a good game. They are a team that has some good weapons and sometimes teams that are in form can be the most dangerous."
Atlanta lines up against an unstoppable Minnesota side this weekend. Minnesota has three players who have scored cumulatively equal to or more goals than all of the other teams in the NASL, in Miguel Ibarra (8), Daniel Mendes (9) and Christian Ramirez (16). United leads the League in scoring with 41 goals, and has conceded the fewest number of goals with 21.
This weekend's match will be fantastic on and off the pitch! Saturday night is College Night, presented by Wells Fargo. College students can get discounted tickets online, using the promo code STUDENTTIX. United is also welcoming Athlete Ally and members of the LBGT community for a night of Pride.
