SAN DIEGO, California - Rio Grande Valley FC (1-2-5) head to the California coast to face fellow conference side San Diego Loyal SC (5-2-2) on Saturday, May 12 at 9:00 p.m. CST, the match will be played at Torero Stadium.
Last Match:
A breath of fresh air offensively was given to the Toros in their last match as they managed to take a convincing 2-0 lead at H-E-B Park. Christiano Francois and Wilmer Andres Cabrera scored their first goals of the season on open play tries, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
At simple thought, this would have been enough for a win in a natural sense. Play to the final whistle, they say; RGV FC learned the hard way that losing defensive focus can indeed cost you a match. In the dying minutes of the match, New Mexico United managed two goals within 90-seconds of each other in added time to turn the Cinco de Mayo fiesta into a sour night at H-E-B Park as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
Upcoming Match:
Rio Grande heads to San Diego to face the second seeded side in the Western conference in what is panning out to be another tightly battled contest; both sides have engaged in close matches historically, their last meeting in San Diego during the 2022 campaign saw Loyal claim a 2-1 victory over the Toros.
Now under a different coaching staff since the departure of Landon Donovan under the helm, San Diego Loyal have not missed a beat being a threat in the conference. RGV FC will have to play a tigh match defensively and produce plenty of shots on target as they expose lanes in the final third, just as they did against New Mexico United who were known to be a north and south attacking squad, instead of spreading the field.
Ideally, the "upset" occurs at Torero Stadium and Rio Grande Valley FC return home to an eager fan base who will be filling the park on Faith & Family Night on May 20th.
