Notes and Quotes: "It's Going to be a Difficult Game for Us"
May 12, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release
The Indomitable Club continues USL Championship competition this weekend, lining up opposite Indy Eleven following a week off from league play. The contest marks the first ever for the Quails against the Indiana side, which comes to the River City off a road win and two straight without defeat.
It's all business for Sacramento as they keep their eyes on staying unbeaten and atop the USL Championship standings. It won't be easy, as the Boys in Blue have performed especially well in enemy territory this season. Both sides are expected to fight hard and make for a good contest.
"We're just going to try to do what we do at home and focus on what we can control," said defender Jared Timmer.
"They've got a squad of players that are high caliber, and they haven't quite clicked yet and got the momentum that I think they will as the season progresses," Head Coach Mark Briggs said of this week's opponent. "It's going to be a difficult game for us. We have to make sure we're ready for what we're going to see. And obviously, we want to win all of our home games, no matter who the opponent is."
A few key players will look to make an impact for Sacramento and give the club a jolt. Sebastian Herrera has showed out in the club's last two, netting three scores and boosting the attack in the absence of Rodrigo Lopez. Tuesday's U.S. Open Cup fixture saw the return of Lee Desmond from injury, bringing back one of the club's leaders eager to help the squad facilitate success regardless of who is on the pitch.
"That's why I feel this group is different - we genuinely want each other to do well," said Lee Desmond. "Of course, I do want to play. But that doesn't mean I don't want Shane [Wiedt] or Conor [Donovan] or Jared [Timmer] to play well. And that's the type of togetherness over the course of the season that's gonna benefit us, and hopefully we can go on and win the championship."
With the U.S. Open Cup now behind them, the club's ready to proceed full speed ahead in league play. While being out of the tournament is tough, every bit of focus can now be directed towards the league and continuing to perform at the high level they have so far.
"We are disappointed because obviously you want to win every game that you compete in," said Head Coach Mark Briggs. "[But] It's also a relief to you know we're going to be able to have a full accomplishment of players available for each and every game."
"We're ready to focus all of our efforts on the USL and continue to be at the top of the table," Timmer went on. And keep getting as many points as we can."
