Birmingham Legion FC (fourth in the USL Championship Eastern Conference standings) entertain the New York Red Bulls II (14th) at Protective Stadium on Sunday, August 28, coming off a stellar 4-2 performance against rivals Memphis 901 FC on the road.
The Legion's dominant win against 2nd place Memphis saw attackers Juan Agudelo, Marlon Santos, Enzo Martinez, and defender Alex Crognale find the back of the net - an offense display that demonstrates the depth of the Three Sparks' attack. BHM is now top ten in the USLC in goals scored (tied for ninth with 41), and in goals allowed (tied for third at 24), one of just five teams in the top ten in both categories (with Louisville, Memphis, Tampa Bay, and San Antonio).
Martinez's goal versus the archrivals was his tenth of the season, the second ever Legion player to hit double digits for Birmingham in a single season. Considering he is also tied for the lead in assists for the squad (five), and is tops in chances created (54, fourth-most in the league), he is someone to watch out for in Sunday's game.
New York Red Bulls II come to Birmingham fresh off a big, come-from-behind 2-2 draw against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, a result that actually helped Legion FC in the push for the playoffs. As far as recent form goes however, New York has just one win, one draw, and four losses in its last six compared to Birmingham's five wins and one loss. NY has just one win on the road, and one draw, in 2022.
John Murphy and Wikelman Carmona both scored goals against the Riverhounds. Murphy is tied for second in goals scored this season for the Baby Bulls, alongside Steven Sserwadda, while Joseph Adebayo-Smith leads the side with four goals on the season.
Despite scoring at least once in five games in a row, New York's attack has produced just 17 goals this season, in 25 games, the fewest in the USL Championship by far. New York's defense has not been the best either, as they have conceded 51 goals this season, the third-most in the USLC.
For this week's UAB Medicine Injury Report, forward Prosper Kasim is questionable after picking up a knock and defender Freddy Kleemann is out due to a torn ACL.
