Match Notes: Atlético Ottawa at Halifax Wanderers Sept 29
September 29, 2021 - Canadian Premier League (CPL)
Atletico Ottawa News Release
Atlético Ottawa takes to the field looking to continue its positive streak of matches (undefeated in the last two) after a convincing win over Cavalry FC on the weekend, as it travels to the Maritimes to face the Halifax Wanderers on Wednesday evening (KO 5:30PM ET, live on OneSoccer).
MATCH NOTES
This will be the fifth of six matches between the two clubs this season, with the latest going the way of the Wanderers on September 11. Overall, Atlético Ottawa is 1W-1D-2L this season against Halifax, and 1W-1D-3L all-time.
Halifax enters the match on a hot streak of 6 matches without a loss (3W-3D), having conceded only 6 goals in those matches, and sitting in fifth place in the standings.
Following the splendid showing on the weekend, Atlético Ottawa saw three of its members make the Gatorade Team of the Week for Week 14: Dylon Powley, Brian Wright and Drew Beckie.
Dylon Powley was close last week to being named the best goalkeeper and secures the selection after a fantastic display against Cavalry FC. The 25-year-old made five key saves at TD Place Stadium but nothing was close to being better than this double save (WATCH) against Sergio Camargo from the spot. (from CanPL.ca)
Wright was a menace against Cavalry FC on Saturday with his directness and pace. In a game where his team didn't dominate the ball or possession, it was the moment that Wright really needed to wait patiently for and then deliver. It hasn't always gone right for him in front of goal recently but this clinical finish (WATCH) shows just how confident he was after he had also caused problems by winning a key penalty for his team, converted by Malcolm Shaw, earlier in the game.
The story of the weekend was told in Ottawa where their captain's comeback from the hospital to the pitch was complete on Saturday after a month out with health concerns. Drew Beckie had been sidelined for much of his club's nine-match winless run due to a complication with a COVID-19 exposure earlier this year. Beckie, who has dealt with heart complications previously, wasn't sure he'd ever been able to play football again. (from CanPL.ca)
With Atlético Ottawa's strikers finding great form of late (M. Shaw 8 goals, B. Wright 4 goals and a number of players in supporting roles), it could make for a fiery evening matchup in Halifax, who can still count on league-leading scorer João Morelli and his 12 goals on the season.
Ottawa will also count on the return of its Spanish conductors with Miguel Acosta (team leader in minutes with 1710), Viti Martinez and Alberto Soto all fit and ready to dress should Mista call on them.
OUT: Brandon John (injury, season); Keesean Ferdinand (injury protocols); Shawn-Claud Lawson (injury protocols); Milovan Kapor (injury protocols).
