Mastrole, Robinson and Brown take conference finals honors
August 24, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
NAPLES, Fla. - Florida quarterback KEN MASTROLE, Peoria full back/linebacker CHRIS ROBINSON and Peoria defensive specialist KEVIN BROWN have been named the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for the Conference Finals of the 2004 ArenaCup Playoffs.
BABY RUTH REAL DEAL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mastrole (6-3, 245, Rhode Island), in his third season, guided the Florida Firecats to their second ArenaCup appearance with a 41-31 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers. On the night Mastrole completed 18 of 32 passes for 197 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. The Firecats passing game became even more important once af2's leading rusher Steve Gorrie was done for the night after an injury on his first rushing attempt of the evening. Mastrole found Anthony Snead and Magic Benton for two touchdowns and Cainon Lamb for the other. Mastrole threw three touchdowns in the second half but two were crucial to the game. With Florida sporting a three-point lead they started the second half with the ball. On a four play drive Mastrole found Anthony Snead for an 11-yard touchdown to put the Firecats up by ten points and make the Pioneers play from two possessions down the rest of the game. Mastrole's final touchdown pass, to Magic Benton with 2:44 left, gave the Firecats a 17-point lead and all but clinched the ArenaCup birth for Florida.
IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Robinson (6-3, 260, New Hampshire), in his rookie season, made game changing plays to close out the first half and to start the second half in Peoria's 30-28 victory over the Tulsa Talons. With Peoria up by three points the Talons had the ball at the Peoria six-yard line and less than a minute left in the first half. With the Talons going for it on fourth down Robinson stormed into the backfield and sacked Tulsa quarterback Bob Bees, forcing him to fumble. Teammate Joe Peters jumped on the ball and Peoria preserved their lead going into halftime. In the third quarter Robinson found the endzone from three yards out to record the first score of the second half, pushing the Peoria lead to 10 points. On the night Robinson rushed four times for 14 yards and the crucial touchdown. On defense he registered 2.0 tackles, including the game changing sack and forced fumble. This is the first weekly award for Robinson.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brown (5-8, 190, South Dakota State), in his rookie season, made the game winning play to advance the Peoria Pirates to the 2004 ArenaCup. After kicker Juul-Nielsen Henrick connected on a 20-yard field goal to put the Pirates up by two points, the Talons took the ball over just three yards short of midfield and 55 seconds left. After one play the Talons were already in Peoria territory, but then Brown made the biggest play of the Pirates' season. With Tulsa quarterback Bob Bees looking down field, Brown intercepted a tipped pass at the Peoria eight-yard line. From there Peoria just ran out the clock and the Pirates were going to their second ArenaCup because of Brown's play. In addition to the interception Brown also recorded six solo tackles. This is the second time in three weeks Brown has earned this award. In the First Round against Oklahoma City Brown made a similar play in the fourth quarter when Brown intercepted a Yard Dawgz' pass in the endzone to clinch the contest.
