San Angelo Colts News Release

EDINBURG, Texas - On June 22 2007, Colts right-hander Luke Massetti threw a complete-game, 4-hit shutout against the Edinburg Coyotes at Foster Field in San Angelo. Just less than a year later, Massetti outdid himself and hurled a complete-game, 1-hit shutout at Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Wednesday night, leading the Colts to an 11-0 victory to clinch a series sweep over the Coyotes. 3,301 fans thought they might witness history, but Nick Aranda broke up the no-hitter with a bloop single to right field with one out in the bottom of the sixth.

The Colts are now over .500, with a record of 11-10, after sweeping their first series of the year and recording their first shutout of the season. They outscored Edinburg 23-4 over the three games, and trailed for only one half-inning in the series.

Massetti (2-0) allowed just two baserunners and neither of them advanced past first base. Besides allowing the hit to Aranda, the righty walked Daryl Jones with two out in the first. Massetti, who struck out six, never faced more than four batters in an inning and retired the side in order in seven of the nine frames he pitched.

The Colts led 7-0 after three innings, with all seven runs coming against Bryan Heaston (1-2), making his first start of the year after eight relief appearances. Heaston took the loss, surrendering seven runs, five earned, on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Andres Rodriguez got the Colts started with a two-run homer in the first, his team-leading sixth of the year. Later in the inning, Jose Torres drove in Benny Craig with a single to center field to make it 3-0. The Colts doubled their lead in the second, as Tyrone Pendergrass hit his first of two triples on the night to bring home Charley Belew, who reached on an error. Pendergrass scored on a double by John Anderson, who later scored on a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez to make it 6-0.

After scoring one more in the third, the Colts blew the game open with four more in the sixth to make it 11-0. Pendergrass drove in two runs with his third triple of the series and he then scored on a groundout by Anderson. Bryan Frichter, who was 5-for-12 in the series, later scored on a passed ball and all four runs were charged to Bric Steed.

The Colts now travel to Harlingen for their first meetings of the year with the WhiteWings, beginning with game one of a three-game set at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday. The Colts then return to Foster Field on Sunday, June 8 to begin a nine-game homestand. The game that day, which begins at 5:05 p.m., will feature Weiner Dog Races, sponsored by Yuppie Puppy.
