Mascots Will Face Off at Wave Game this Friday

Milwaukee Wave News Release

(Milwaukee, WI) - Last year's MVP won it for his team with a bullet from the right side of the field; this year, the grudge match continues as the Milwaukee Wave hosts the 12th annual mascot game this Friday (April 2) at halftime of their final regular season home match against the Philadelphia Kixx, 7:05 PM at U.S. Cellular Arena. Rollie, the Journal Sentinel mascot who was also the 2003 Game MVP is ready to go out and showcase his skills again, "I was feeling it last year on that game winning goal, but this year I've really hit the gym hard and I'm going for a hat trick."

Pitting the Furries Wanting Fame against the Not Your Mama's Mascots, each mascot has been training to prove that they are the one that captains Rollie and Verlo's Mattress Man should pick onto the starting squads. Both captains are seasoned veterans of mascot games and are looking for specific skills in their players. "I've been scouting Einstein Bagel's Edward Einstein because I feel his oddly shaped head will allow him to head the ball down the field," stated Mattress Man, "I know Rollie has been working on getting the Wisconsin Timber Rattler's Fang for intimidating purposes, but I feel he will spend too much time in the penalty box."

A mascot's physique and fitness are always a concern when drafting a player and some have been lobbying on their own to make the starting squad. Waukesha County's Recycle Raccoon reported he has been lifting hundreds of pounds of cans and other recyclable products each day to ensure he will be in top form. Although cross-town rivals in some sports, the Marquette Golden Eagle and UW-Milwaukee's Victor E. Panther have joined a work-out group led by the Milwaukee Admiral's Roscoe, a member of last year's winning team.

"After the last game, a few of my teammates wanted to know how I keep in top form during the off season so I put together a program to keep them toned," commented Roscoe, "Many Milwaukee mascots have joined the group and I would say watch out for Taco Bell's Mr. Taco this year; he may be shaped like a lunch entree but his leg strength is incredible. I'd like to see him match up against Greg Howes in the power kick - now that would be a battle!"

The last game proved to be a physical match-up as a small bowling pin was the victim of a vicious push into the boards in the second half of the game. Therefore, scouts say they are looking for size and strength this year. Piggly Wiggly's Mr. Pig, WE Energie's Power Bear, and Kellogg's Tony the Tiger are all obvious choices for large mascots who will be able to withstand the slide tackles and physical play of such mascots as UW-Parkside's Ranger and the Wisconsin Woodchuck's Woodrow T. Woodchuck. Referee Brad Beach is familiar with all of the players and will be keeping an eye on many of them. "I know their game and I won't tolerate any misconduct. I understand McGruff the Crime Dog takes a bite out of crime on the mean streets of Milwaukee, but if he takes a bite out of Cap'n Crunch we'll have a serious problem."

Players will be participating for the love of soccer, but when they step up to the kick off each mascot wants to be victorious. Bernie Brewer is no exception as he stated, "This game isn't just about winning a soccer game, it's about pride. The people of Milwaukee know I can throw myself down a slide after a home run, but they also need to see that I am ready at any time to take no prisoners on the field."

Tickets for Friday's game, as well as all Wave home games are available at the Wisconsin Center District (WCD) Box Office, located between U.S. Cellular Arena and the Milwaukee Theater at 510 W. Kilbourn Ave., all TicketMaster Outlets, or by phone charge at 414-276-4545. Groups of 10 or more should contact the Wave's Group Sales Dept. at 414-224-WAVE (9283) for group rate discounts.
