Kansas City Comets News Release

COMING UP FOR THE COMETS:

The Kansas City Comets take on the San Diego Sockers in their last regular season game. Kickoff at Kemper Arena is set for 7:35 p.m.

The Sockers hold a 2-1 series advantage, but the Comets are 1-0 at Kemper Arena. The Comets won the teams' last meeting in February 7-5 at Kemper but lost the two previous matches in San Diego by a combined score of 13-5.

Comets forward Dino Delevski has led the way for the Comets with four goals and an assist in the three games. The Comets will need to shut down San Diego's Paul Wright, who has recorded eleven points in the three previous matches.

The theme of the game is "Fan Appreciation Night," and all of the Comets' loyal fans will have chances to win great prizes throughout the game. Upon entering Kemper Arena, fans will also receive an entertainment coupon book with lots of discounts!

"WILD" WES WADE:

After scoring the game-winning goal in overtime against the Monterrey Fury, Comets veteran Wes Wade was named the MISL's Offensive Player of the Week for the seven-day period ending on March 28.

The stunning conclusion came at 7:56 in overtime after Wade made a quick dive to the turf to head the ball past Fury goalkeeper Aurelio Portes. Wade also scored the Comets' fifth goal in the second quarter and recorded assists on goals by Matt Tanzini and Jamar Beasley. Wade's goal keeps Kansas City in the playoff hunt.

This is Wade's first honor of the season and is a fitting tribute for the veteran who will play in his last regular season game at Kemper Arena on Saturday, April 3. Wade is in his 12th season of indoor soccer and has publicly stated that he will not return next season.

THE PLAYOFF PICTURE:

The Comets remain in the hunt for the fifth seed in the playoffs. The Baltimore Blast, Philadelphia KiXX, Milwaukee Wave and Dallas Sidekicks have already wrapped up a playoff spot.

The Comets (16-19) are competing with two other teams for the last two playoff spots: Cleveland (15-19) and St. Louis (13-20). The Comets have already mathematically locked out the San Diego Sockers and the Monterrey Fury.

The Comets need to lock out either Cleveland or St. Louis to be ensured a playoff spot. Right now, the Comets' magic number is set at two for Cleveland and one for St. Louis. Any combination of Kansas City wins and/or Cleveland Force losses that equals two will lock out Cleveland, OR any combination of Kansas City wins and/or St. Louis losses that equals one will lock out St. Louis.

This week Cleveland plays back-to-back road games. The Force meet the Baltimore Blast on Friday night and the Philadelphia KiXX on Saturday night. St. Louis plays at Monterrey on Wednesday night and at Dallas on Saturday night.

GALAXY GIRL NEWS:

The Galaxy Girls will be holding a crayon, book and art supply drive to benefit Children's Mercy Hospital at the Comets' last regular season home game on Saturday, April 3. Donations will be accepted at the Comets Sales Table. Meghan, a member of the 2003-04 Galaxy Girl squad, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in January 2003. She was taken to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. for treatment. The tumor was successfully removed, and Meghan has made a complete recovery, thanks to the many people at CMH.

The Galaxy Girls decided that a Crayon, Book and Art Supply drive would be the best service to provide at this time. The clinics saw over 225,000 children in 2002 and there are over 20 clinics that use crayons in their waiting rooms. The Galaxy Girls would appreciate all of the help they can get from the community. Please come out and show your support for the Comets, the Galaxy Girls and Children's Mercy Hospital.
