Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
FISHKILL, NY-- The Hudson Valley Renegades could not continue the momentum from their win last night. Tri-City catcher Kevin Martir drove in three runs with a homer and double as the ValleyCats defeated the Renegades 5-3 on Friday night at Dutchess Stadium.
Tri-City got on the board first in the first. With one out, designated hitter Daz Cameron singled then moved to third on a single by leftfielder Ronnie Dawson. Cameron would then score on a passed ball by Hudson Valley catcher Danny De La Calle to give the ValleyCats a 1-0 lead.
The visitors added to their lead in the second. Third baseman Randy Cesar led off with a single, then scored on an RBI double to right-center by Martir.
The Renegades got on the board in the fourth. Centerfielder Jake Fraley was hit with a pitch to begin the inning, then moved to second on a stolen base. A groundout moved him to third, then with two out rightfielder Angel Perez slapped a single to right to cut the Tri-City lead to 2-1.
The ValleyCats seemingly put the game away in the seventh. With one out, rightfielder Brauley Mejia reached on an error, then scored on a two-run homer by Martir (1) to give Tri-City a 4-1 lead. It was the first homer of the year at Dutchess Stadium.
Hudson Valley responded with two of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Perez, third baseman Jim Haley and second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni began the inning with singles. Mastrobuoni's scored Perez to make the score 4-2. Following a strikeout, runners were at the corners with one out, when shortstop Bill Pujols hit into a fielder's choice to third to score Haley and pull the Renegades to within one. However, with runners at first and second and one out, ValleyCats pitcher Chris Cotton got groundouts by leftfielder Ryan Boldt and centerfielder Jake Fraley to get out of the jam.
Tri-City scored their final run in the eighth. With a runner at first and one out, leftfielder Ronnie Dawson grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice, however the throw from Pujols in a double-play attempt was errant and Dawson moved to second on the throwing error. Centerfielder Stephen Wrenn followed that with an RBI single to center to score Dawson and give the ValleyCats a much-needed insurance run at 5-3.
The ValleyCats were led offensively by Martir who went 2-4 with a two-run homer, and an RBI double. His three RBI were his first ones of the season.
The Renegades got three hits by Haley who also scored a run. Perez went 2-4 with an RBI and run scored as well.
Getting the win for Tri-City was Sebastian Kessay (1-0) who allowed an earned run on three hits in 5.1 innings of work. He also struck out seven. The loss went to Hudson Valley starter Brock Burke (0-1) who pitched well, going five innings and allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out a season-high eight batters of Renegades pitchers.
There were a total of 23 strikeouts in the game; 12 of them by the Renegades. Hudson Valley also committed two more errors giving them 13 over the last four games. They also allowed two more unearned runs, which gives them 10 unearned runs allowed over the same stretch.
Hudson Valley continues its three-game series with Tri-City tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. Right-hander Jose Alonzo (0-1, 1.00 ERA) will take the hill for the Renegades against righty Edgardo Sandoval (0-0, 1.50 ERA) for the ValleyCats.
