The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell to the West Virginia Black Bears, 11-5, on Friday night. Auburn picked up a season-high 12 hits in the loss.

The Doubledays (9-6) jumped on the board in the top of the first inning off Black Bears right-hander Luis Escobar. Blake Perkins led off with a single. Daniel Johnson then reached base on a fielder's choice in which Perkins was out at second base. With Johnson on first base, Escobar tried to pick Johnson off at first base but made an errant throw allowing Johnson to advance all the way to third base. Johnson then scored on a Kelvin Gutierrez single to put Auburn up 1-0. With Nick Banks batting, Gutierrez stole second base. Banks struck out, but Tres Barrera hit an RBI double to score Gutierrez and give the Doubledays a 2-0 lead.

The Black Bears (8-7) scored in the bottom of the second inning off of Doubledays right-hander Wilber Pena. With two outs, Pena hit Clark Eagan with a pitch. Erik Forgione then worked a walk to put runners on first and second base with two outs. Sandy Santos followed with a ground rule double to left-center field, scoring Eagan to cut Auburn's lead to one, 2-1.

West Virginia tied the game in the second inning, once again with two outs. After the first two batters were retired, Albert Baur and Kevin Mahala both walked. Matthew Diorio followed with a base hit that scored Baur from second base to tie the game at two.

The Black Bears took the lead in the fifth inning. With one out, Mahala singled. Mahala then advanced to third base on a Diorio single. Eagan followed with a two-run double, which scored Mahala and Diorio to give West Virginia a 4-2 advantage.

Auburn tied the game again in the sixth inning. Barrera led off with a single. Ryan Ripken struck out, but David Kerian singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Paul Panaccione then grounded into a fielder's choice. On the play, David Kerian was out at second base, but Panaccione was safe at first, and Barrera scored to cut West Virginia's lead to one, 4-3. With Dalton Dulin batting, Panaccione stole second base. Dulin then singled to score Panaccione from second base and tie the game at four.

West Virginia regained the lead in the seventh inning. With two outs, Diorio doubled. Hunter Owen followed with a double to score Diorio and put the Black Bears up 5-4. Forgione then knocked in his first run of the game with a single that scored Owen from second to extend West Virginia's lead to two, 6-4.

The Black Bears broke the game open in the eighth inning. West Virginia scored five runs in the inning on four hits. Three Black Bears Batters walked in the inning that saw nine total West Virginia players come to bat. The five-run inning pushed the Black Bears' lead to seven, 11-4.

Auburn scored one run in the top of the ninth inning. Ripken walked with the bases loaded to cut West Virginia's lead to six, 11-5. With the bases still loaded and one out, Kerian lined a ball towards the shortstop position where Forgione leaped to steal away a hit and then double off the runner at second base to end the game.

The Doubledays and Black Bears meet again Saturday night for the second game of a three-game series. Left-hander Yonathan Ramirez will pitch for Auburn, while West Virginia will send right-hander Stephan Meyer to the mound. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. from Morgantown.
