Marlins Fall to Owls, Snap Three-Game Winning Streak

FOREST CITY, N.C.- The Morehead City Marlins (7-14) saw their three-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Forest City Owls (12-6), dropping a 4-1 decision at McNair Field Monday evening.

The Owls plated the game's winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Nick McQuail led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a single by Kurt Seiders. The next batter, leadoff man Nate Chong, hit a fly ball to deep right, scoring McQuail from third and giving the Owls a 2-1 lead.

Forest City scored the first run of the evening in the second inning when Justin Bryan reached first base on a dropped third strike. After stealing second base he came around to score on a single to right field by McQuail to put the Owls in front 1-0.

The score held until the sixth inning when Sam Ott and Robbie Rea singled back-to-back to lead off the frame. The Marlins tied the game when Dalton Knight hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Ott from third base.

The Owls tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Stephen Tarkenton and a balk charged to Rafael Guerrero to close the scoring at 4-1 in favor of the Owls.

Drake Thomason (2-2) earned the win, going seven innings and allowing just one run on four hits while Jake Padgett got his first save, tossing a scoreless ninth. Steve Landell finished with a no-decision after throwing six innings and allowing just one run on four hits while Tyler Maxwell (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up two runs in one inning of relief.

The Marlins are continue their road trip tomorrow night as they make their way south to take on the Columbia Blowfish. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.

Notes: Drew Woodall threw out two base runners trying to steal... In his Marlins' debut, Eric Peterson reached base three times... Maxwell also made his Marlins debut... Ryan Cranmer saw his streak of reaching base safely in 12 straight games come to an end.
