
Marlins Can't Capitalize, Fall to Pilots 4-3

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Peninsula Pilots (6-5-1) outlasted the Morehead City Marlins (3-10) Monday night in Morehead City, 4-3 as the Marlins left 16 men on base in the contest.
The Marlins left at least two runners on base in each inning from the fourth through the ninth as they dropped their third straight game.
The Pilots opened the scoring in the first inning when Joey Andrews singled in Zac MacAneney and Nick Thompson came around to score on a balk to make the score 2-0. The Marlins answered in the fourth inning, when Corey Bass ripped an RBI-double to score Matt Anderson with two outs.
The Pilots opened up a three-run lead in the sixth inning, when Corey Davis unloaded a two-run home run to left field, making the score 4-1 in favor of the Pilots which chased Marlins starter Taylor Robinson out of the game.
Morehead City got two runs back in the seventh inning, when Sal Annunziata laced an RBI-single to center field to score Sam Ott and Dalton Knight lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Annunziata. The Marlins threatened in the eighth and ninth innings, but could not plate any runs, leaving four men on base between the two innings.
Josh Heddinger (1-0) earned the win for the Pilots, tossing five innings and allowing one run on four hits. Stephen Richter picked up his first save, entering in the ninth inning with a runner on an no outs but setting down the Marlins without allowing a run. Robinson (1-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The Marlins return to Big Rock Stadium tomorrow night for the sixth matchup of the season against the Wilmington Sharks. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with Matt Sutor on the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
Notes: Robbie Rea made his debut for the Marlins, picking up a single in the ninth inning... The Marlins played an errorless game, marking the fourth time they have done that over the past six games... Ryan Cranmer saw a five-game hitting streak come to an end... Ryan Oglesby celebrated his 20th birthday, tossing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball out of the bullpen.
