Marlins Breeze Past Tobs

Morehead City Marlins News Release

WILSON, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins (1-1 second half, 11-18 overall) scored two runs in the first, three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth on their way to an 8-4 victory over the Wilson Tobs (1-1 second half, 10-20 overall) at Fleming Stadium Monday evening.

The Marlins jumped on the board with two runs in the first inning and never looked back, when Jarrett Higgins was hit by a pitch and Robbie Rea doubled to left field to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Sam Ott then grounded out to second base, scoring Higgins and later in the inning Eric Peterson singled to right field to score Rea from first and give the Marlins a 2-0 advantage.

Then in the top of the third, Rea led off with a single before Ott followed it up with a walk. That's when Sal Annunziata cracked a three-run home run down the left field line, putting the Marlins up 5-0 through 2 ½ innings of play.

After Wilson struck for two runs in the bottom of the third, Morehead City scored another run in the fourth when Chad Shannon scored on a tapper out in front of home plate off the bat of Sam Ott. Later in the inning, Higgins scored on a wild pitch to give the Marlins another five run advantage, this time leading 7-2.

The Marlins weren't done scoring however, as in the sixth inning Landon Moseley led off with a walk. Shannon followed with a bunt single, but the throw to first base was errant and went down the right field line, scoring Moseley all the way from first and growing the Marlins' lead to six. Wilson tacked on two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Marlins' lead was too much for a Wilson comeback.

David Lucroy (2-1) pitched five strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) to earn the win while Tyler Maxwell threw two innings of hitless ball in the sixth and seventh innings. Demetrus Ingram (0-1) took the loss giving up seven runs on five hits and three walks in four innings of work.

Offensively for Morehead City, Robbie Rea was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Chad Shannon extended his hitting streak to six games with a 1-for-3 evening.

The Marlins are back in action tomorrow evening when they play host to the Edenton Steamers. It's Twisted Tea Tuesday presented by Sam Adams, Town of Morehead City night and $1 hot dog night at Big Rock Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 as Matt Sutor has the live call on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.

Notes: The Marlins scored in the first inning for the seventh time this year... Annunziata's home run was his third of the season, and first since June 3... The eight runs were one off the season high for Morehead City, which was nine back on June 3...Lucroy gave up one earned run in the third inning, breaking a streak of 14 straight innings without allowing an earned run.
