HOUSTON, Texas - The Houston Aeros scored first and gave up two leads in the 5-4 overtime loss to the Toronto Marlies in front of 6,038 fans at Toyota Center Friday night. The loss ended the Aeros (22-15-2-2) winning-streak of four games and extended the Marlies' (28-9-0-4) to three games.
The Aeros were led by center Adrian Foster scoring three points (1-2=3) tying career highs in points and assists in a game. The Marlies had four players scoring two points each: center Kris Newbury, left wing Colin Murphy and center John Mitchell each scoring a goal and an assist as center Alex Foster tallied two assists. Goaltender Justin Pogge allowed four goals and made 28 saves for the win as Aeros' net-minder Nolan Schaefer blocked 27 of 32 shots on net.
The first period was staggered with a total of six penalties providing the Marlies with two power-plays and the Aeros with one. Neither team converted on the man-advantage but the Aeros defenseman Paul Albers netted the first goal of the game at 19:08 in the first period, only two seconds after the Aeros' power-play expired. Centers Marco Rosa and Adrian Foster earned the assists as the Aeros took the 1-0 lead into the locker room.
The Marlies took control of the second period scoring three goals to the Aeros' one. Toronto finally got on the board at 12:11 in the period as right wing Jeremy Williams netted the team's first goal with assists going to defenseman Derrick Walser and center Kris Newbury. Aero's center Serge Payer took back the lead with a goal at 13:35 in the period. Left wing Benoit Pouliot and defenseman Maxim Noreau recorded the assists giving the Aeros the 2-1 lead.
Toronto's Newbury tied the game back up at two each with his second point of the night, a goal, at 14:42 in the second frame. Right wing Brent Aubin recorded the lone assist. Marlies' left wing Colin Murphy chipped in the go-ahead goal at 19:48 for a 3-2 lead heading into the second intermission. Center Alex Foster was credited for the lone assist. All four goals scored in the period were even-strength markers.
The final period came back in the Aeros' favor as Foster tied the game at three goals each at 15:19 in the period. Right wing Joel Ward assisted on the goal. Houston kept rolling as right wing Cal Clutterbuck netted the go-ahead goal at 17:31 in the period with assists going to Foster and center Steve Kelly. However, the Marlies tied the game again with only 41 seconds left to play on a Mitchell goal with an extra attacker on the ice. Right wing David Ling and Murphy marked the assists as the teams went into overtime with four goals a piece.
The Marlies kept the pressure on for most of overtime and finally tallied the game-winner at 3:02 in the extra session. Defenseman Darryl Boyce netted the winning marker with assists going to Mitchell and Foster for the 5-4 final.
