June 22, 2011 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Danville Otterbots News Release

Pulaski, VA. - A four run third inning and ten strikeouts from their starter helped Pulaski come away with a win in the season opener. The Mariners were led by their starter, Ambioris Hidalgo, who pitched six solid innings of one run ball. The D-Braves led until the third inning after scoring an early run in the top of the first, but the Mariners four run third inning was enough to give them the win. Pulaski is now 1-0, while Danville falls to 0-1 to start off the 2011 season.

The Braves got off to a quick start after nearly an hour and a half of waiting through a rain delay. The second batter of the game, Kyle Kubitza, walked. The designated hitter, Brandon Drury, doubled to left which sent Kubitza to third. Hidalgo then hit William Beckwith to load the bases with just one out. Atlanta's fifth round pick, Nick De Santiago, brought Kubitza in from third on his groundout for the first Danville run of the year.

The score remained 1-0 until Pulaski broke it open in the bottom of the third inning. After getting their leadoff man on, Danville starter, Ernesto Silva (0-1), balked which put a runner on second with no outs. A single to the outfield and then an infield single by center fielder, Jamal Austin, plated Pulaski's first run of the game.

With just one out in the inning, a passed ball got by Nick De Santiago, and gave the Mariners the 2-1 edge. A single by Jean Acevedo followed as did another run. Later on in the inning, with two down, a groundball to right field scored another and got under Sam Munson's glove for his first error of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Mariners added an insurance run after Patrick Brady leadoff the inning with a single. He then stole second and third base and eventually scored on a single by Bryan Brito. That would be all the scoring the game had until Danville's, William Beckwith, powered a ball well over the centerfield wall that is measured at 405 feet. The homerun was his first of the season and made the score 5-2.

Hidalgo (1-0) lasted six strong innings, while giving up just five hits and one run. By the end of his outing he had struck out ten D-Braves. Reynaldo Sabala gathered his first save of the season after pitching the final three innings of the game. Jarrett Miller, the 21st round draft choice, got some work in for the D-Braves, pitching two innings while walking two and striking out five. The game was delayed by an hour and thirty two minutes and was played in front of paid attendance of 937 people.

The three game series continues tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The Danville Braves will open up their home season on Monday, June 27 at 7 p.m. when they take on the Princeton Rays. The first 1,000 fans at the game will receive a 2010 magnet schedule.
