Mariners gain valuable points in Eastern Conference race

Virginia Beach, Virginia – The Virginia Beach Mariners are finishing up a very successful ten days. Tuesday, June 15, the team hosted the Second round of the U.S. Open Cup and came away with a 2-0 win over the Dallas/Fort Worth Tornadoes. Friday, June 18, the Mariners hosted Milwaukee and won 5-2 on national television, although the foul weather caused the match to be delayed 90 minutes and it was broadcast on June 23 tape delayed. Tuesday, June 22, Virginia Beach hosted the defending A-League champion Charleston Battery, winning 2-0 and tonight traveled to Puerto Rico to take on the 2004 A-League expansion Islanders, drawing 0-0. The Mariners and Islanders will face off again on Sunday at 5 p.m. The Mariners have gained seven points and moved up from 8th place to 5th place in the Eastern Conference and have gone undefeated in their last four matches.

The Team

Forward Dante Washington was named to the A-League Team of the Week last week for his two goals and two assists against Milwaukee. Washington also scored both goals in the 2-0 win over Charleston. In two matches, Washington scored four goals and two assists and now ranks second in the A-League in points with 18 in 11 matches. He also ranks third in goals with seven.

Forward Carlos Garcia assisted on both of WashingtonÂ’s goals against Charleston and scored two goals and four assists in two matches.

Goalkeeper Matt Nelson recorded his first shutout of the season against Charleston recording six saves in the match. He ranks sixth in the League in minutes with 1034, eighth in wins with 4, and third in saves with 55. (NelsonÂ’s stats do not include tonightÂ’s match.)

Open Cup

The Mariners advanced to the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on June 15 and will travel to Dallas on Wednesday to take on the Burn of MLS at Old Panther Field in Duncanville, Texas at 7 p.m. CT. Dante Washington played for Dallas from 1996-1999, scoring 17 goals and six assists. The winner of this match will host the Colorado Rapids on July 20 in round four of the tournament.

MarinersÂ’ Upcoming A-League Matches

The Mariners will host the Montreal Impact on July 2 and the Syracuse Salty Dogs on July 5. Both matches will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at the Sportsplex.
