WAVE UNITED (2-7-1, 7 PTS.) V. THUNDER (6-2-3, 21 PTS.)** **entering 6/25
BROADCAST: 540 AM, WRRD ("The Word")
Wave United Update: Milwaukee enters this weekend's action at 2-2-1 home / 0-5-0 road / 2-7-1 overall (7 points) following Wednesday night's (6/23) 2-1 triumph over the Portland Timbers at Uihlein Soccer Park. Former Thunder stalwart Johnny Torres provided the game-winner, his second of the season for Wave United with a free kick strike in the 61st minute as Milwaukee snapped its second three-game losing streak of the 2004 campaign.
Coach Art Kramer's team will be attempting to secure its first road victory of the season in Saturday night's clash in St. Paul. The current five-game road losing skid ties the longest road losing streak in Milwaukee A-League history dating back to the 1999 season when the Rampage lost five straight road matches (6/4/99 â 7/2/99) on its way to a 13-15-0 mark, the only losing season in Brew City professional outdoor soccer history.
Not only does this weekend's action wrap up the regular season series between Milwaukee and Minnesota, but it's also the fourth of six back-to-back weekends for Wave United this season. Milwaukee is currently 0-5-1 in such circumstances, having dropped its last four since a scoreless draw with the Thunder on 5/22 at Uihlein Soccer Park (see below).

Johnny Torres' goal in the 61st minute broke a 1-1 tie and propelled Wave United to a 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers Wednesday night (6/23) at Uihlein Soccer Park. A crowd of 1,131 saw Wave United raise its record to 2-7-1 (7 points) while the Western Conference leading Timbers fell to 8-4-0 (24 points). The Wave United victory, which ended Milwaukee's three-game losing streak, also evened the season series between the clubs at one game apiece.
Portland struck first as Byron Alvarez scored his sixth goal of the season in the 17th minute to give the Timbers a 1-0 lead. Alvarez collected a deflected clearance outside the penalty area before dribbling past three defenders to score on a left-footer from the middle from the middle of the area against Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin.
Milwaukee evened the score in the 38th minute on Chad Dombrowski's header from eight yards away off a corner kick by Torres. Torres scored the game-winner on a free kick just outside the penalty area when he curled in a 22-yard shot to the top right corner of the goal past Portland âkeeper Bayard Elfvin.
Portland finished the match two men down when both Gavin Wilkinson (second yellow card) and Lee Morrison (red card for dissent) were ejected in the 81st and 82nd minutes, respectively. Milwaukee also finished a man down when Nino Marcantonio was excused in the 90th minute for drawing his second yellow card. Larkin posted the win with two saves while Elfvin, who was making his first start of the season, took the loss despite a fine performance in which he registered eight saves.

Chris Vorenkamp's goal in the final seconds of overtime propelled the Minnesota Thunder to a 1-0 win over Wave United in Milwaukee's 2004 A-League regular season opener on 5/21 at James Griffin Stadium in St. Paul, MN. Vorenkamp scored on a turning right-footer from the middle of the penalty area after his initial header off a corner kick from teammate Marco Ferruzzi was blocked by Milwaukee defender Joe Hammes.
Until that point, neither team had manufactured many good scoring chances. Wave United's best chance came in the 7th minute when midfielder Matt Schmidt blasted a shot over the goal from 12 yards out on a ball laid back to him by forward Nick Walls. Minnesota, which out-shot Milwaukee 9-0 in the second half, created two good chances inside the penalty area (Marshall Morehead, John Menyongar) that were turned away by Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin.
Joe Warren posted the shutout for Minnesota with five saves, including a good stop of a free kick attempt from 20 yards out by David
Wagenfuhr in the second overtime period. Larkin finished with five saves for Milwaukee.

Wave United capped off its opening weekend against the arch-rival Minnesota Thunder with a 0-0 tie against the Thunder in Milwaukee's home opener on 5/22 at Uihlein Soccer Park. The two teams battled to the scoreless draw in soggy conditions on the Pat Jones Field before a paid crowd of 1,378. The result moved Milwaukee's record to 0-1-1 (1 point) while Minnesota had its mark go to 3-1-2 (11 points).
Similar to the previous night's game in Minnesota, neither team manufactured many quality scoring chances. The Thunder's best chance came early in the second half on a sliding right footer from eight yards out by Chris Vorenkamp (who had scored the game-winner at the end of overtime on Friday night) that was stopped on a diving save near the right post by Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin. Milwaukee's best opportunity came late in the second half when Kevin Burk won the ball from Minnesota âkeeper Joe Warren at the top of the penalty area only to have his turning 15-yard attempt headed away from the goal by Thunder defender Dustin Branan. Wave United midfielder Joe Hammes had the only other near-miss in the contest, a blast from 45 yards away in the 52nd minute that beat Warren but clanged off the right post.
Larkin (7 saves) recorded his first shutout of the season while Warren (4 saves) registered his fifth. Coupled with the Thunder's 1-0 victory in St. Paul the previous night (5/21), Minnesota claimed the two-game total goal series 1-0 thus denying Wave United's bid to secure a spot in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. (The Thunder had already clinched an automatic bid on the basis of its runner-up finish in the 2003 A-League playoffs.)

Wave United Notes:
*The originally scheduled May 14 season opener v. Edmonton, postponed due to wet grounds at Uihlein Soccer Park, has been rescheduled for Thursday, August 19, 7:35 PM at Uihlein Soccer Park. Fans with tickets for the May 14 game may exchange them for that game, or any other 2004 Wave United regular season contest. Call the Wave Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283).
*Wave United's 2-1 win v. Por on 6/23 was Milwaukee's first this season when allowing the initial score. Wave United is now 1-4-0 when the opponent scores first after going 1-8-0 in similar circumstances last season.
*The five goals surrendered by Milwaukee in the 5-2 loss @ VB on 6/18 were the most yielded by a Wave United team, and the most given up by a Milwaukee A-League squad since the Rampage dropped a 5-2 decision at Portland on 8/30/01.
*Wave United's 2-1 loss to Seattle on 6/13 at Pat Jones Field was Milwaukee's first loss on the PJF in five career outings. Wave United was 3-0-0 last season before playing to a scoreless draw with Minnesota on 5/22. In each case, the games were shifted to the PJF due to wet or unplayable conditions on the Stadium Field at Uihlein Soccer Park.
*Wave United has trailed just once at halftime (1-0 v. Sea on 6/13) so far this season. However, Milwaukee has been outscored 14-3 after halftime and has blown three-of-its four halftime advantages.
*Jim Larkin's shutout on 6/6 v. Syracuse was the 25th of his seven-year A-League career (91 games) and the 9th of his two-year Wave United career (25 games).
*The two shutouts suffered by Wave United 5/21 and 5/22 were the first back-to-back shutouts in team history. Wave United was shutout six times in 2003, three of which occurred at Uihlein Soccer Park.
*The scoreless draw on 5/22 with Minnesota was also the first tie in Wave United history. Wave United did not have any ties when it posted an A-League best 18-10-0 (54 pts.) record in 2003. Coach Art Kramer's team played just one overtime period the entire season, that coming in a 1-0 (OT) win at El Paso on 6/22/03.
*Minnesota's 1-0 aggregate goal victory over Wave United on 5/21 and 5/22 denied Milwaukee a chance to participate in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. It's the first time since the 2000 season that a Milwaukee A-League club has not qualified for the U.S. Open Cup.
*Wave United's season-opening five-game winless streak tied the longest winless streak in Milwaukee A-League history. The '97 Rampage squad also went winless in five straight (all losses) from 5/25/97 thru 6/20/97.
*Four players have logged double duty with both Wave United and the U.S. National Futsal Team so far this season. Forwards Greg Howes and Johnny Torres, along with defender Pat White and goalkeeper Nick Vorberg all saw action in a CONCACAF qualifier v. Honduras last month at U.S. Cellular Arena. The Keith Tozer coached U.S. squad defeated their Central American rivals 7-1 (5-1 on 5/18, 2-0 on 5/20) in the two-game total goal series to enable the U.S. to advance to the eight-team CONCACAF Futsal Championships July 23-31 in Costa Rica. The top two teams from the latter competition will qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Championship, which will be held in Chinese Taipei Nov. 21 â Dec. 5, 2004.
