PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - The Bradenton Marauders, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, swept a two game series with the St. Lucie Mets Thursday, 4-2, at Charlotte Sports Park.

The Marauders got on the board early with Aaron Baker driving home Jarek Cunningham in the first for a 1-0 lead. Cunningham hit a one-out triple of Mets starter Jeurys Familia to get on board. The sacrifice fly for Baker marked his team best 24th RBI of the season.

The early run was followed by a stalemate. Both Familia and Marauders starter Phillip Irwin retired batter after batter, with Irwin not allowing any runs over five innings and not allowing a hit until the fourth. At one point Familia sat down 13 hitters in a row.

But the Marauders held the lead and in the eighth inning picked up crucial insurance runs. Adalberto Santos drew a one-out walk against Mets reliever John Church. Bengie Gonzalez followed that with a double off the first base bag to score Santos for a 2-0 advantage. Two batters later Cunningham blasted his eighth homerun of the year for a 4-0 lead. The hit was also his Minor League leading 21st extra base hit.

The homer's importance was shown in the ninth when Stefan Welch hit a two run blast to make it 4-2, but the Mets did no further damage.

Irwin picked up his first win of the year with Brett Lorin pitching two and two thirds inning of relief with six strikeouts. Lefty Jhonathan Ramos threw as well. The loss was charged to Familia, his first. Ramos picked up the save, his first.

The Marauders open a three game series with the charlotte Stone crabs Friday at Charlotte sports Park beginning at 6:30pm. Radio coverage starts at 6:15 on 1280-AM WTMY. Bradenton returns to McKechnie Field Saturday at 7pm against the Stone Crabs. The game is Bright House Networks Customer Appreciation night and features postgame fireworks.
