Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Winnipeg, MB - The Manitoba Moose, affiliate of the Victoria Salmon Kings and Vancouver Canucks, has reduced their roster after a weekend of exhibition games versus the Lakehead University Thunderwolves, and has assigned three more players to Victoria.
The Salmon Kings welcome back recent acquisition Warren McCutcheon, and received Forward Francois-Pierre Guenette and Defensemen Matt Kelly.
A native of Carmen, Manitoba, McCutcheon led the University of Manitoba Bison last season with 60 points (27 goals, 33 assists) in 41 games.
A 7th round pick (#222 overall) of the Vancouver Canucks in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Guenette scored 42 points (12 goals, 30 assists) in 68 games with the Columbia Inferno (ECHL) last season. From 2001-2005, the 6-foot, 183-lb native of Laval, PQ, played in the QMJHL between the Halifax Mooseheads and Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, and tallied 244 points (95 goals, 149 assists) in 246 games. With 85 points in 69 games, Guenette led the Screaming Eagles scoring charts in 2003-04.
"Francois-Pierre is a good two-way player with very good offensive skills," said Tony McAulay, Salmon Kings Head Coach. "He is a shifty forward, whose natural position is Centre, which is a bonus to us and our scoring lines."
Kelly, who played three games with the Moose last season, hails from Tottenham, ON and played four seasons (2002-2006) in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In 201 games with the Belleville Bulls of the OHL, the 6-foot-2, 195-lb Defenseman earned 71 points (21 goals, 50 assists) in the regular season, plus 4 points in 6 playoff games in 2005-06.
"Matt's assets are his strength and size," said McAulay, "and he is a young prospect who is eager to move up to the next level."
"We are excited to have all three of these players part of our developmental system," added MacAulay.
The Moose will open their sixth season in the American Hockey League Wednesday, October 4th in Wilkes-Barre against the Penguins at 6:05 p.m. CST.
The Salmon Kings training camp begins October 5th, with on-ice sessions starting on Friday October 6th. Check out the Salmon Kings "Annual Blue and White game" at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Admission is free to the intra squad matchup which begins at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday October 11th.
