Mammoth survives Storm
February 28, 2004 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release
ANAHEIM, Calif. â The Colorado Mammoth, a team once known for its inconsistent play on the road and inability to outplay weaker opponents, took another huge step on Friday night toward eliminating that reputation.
Gary Gait had four goals and Brian Langtry added a season-high three goals to lead the Mammoth to a 13-8 victory over the Anaheim Storm.
The Mammoth improved to 7-2, increasing its lead in the National Lacrosse League's Western Division to one-and-a-half games over idle San Jose (5-3) and tying the Buffalo Bandits (7-2) for the league's best mark.
Playing in front of just 4,249 fans at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, the Mammoth used a four-goal run in the second quarter to take a 7-4 lead into halftime and never looked back. The Storm (0-7) narrowed it to 7-5 but Colorado scored with 14 seconds left in the third quarter to push its lead back to three.
Colorado improved to 4-1 on the road this season, surpassing its road-win total of last season when it sputtered to a 3-5 record away from Pepsi Center.
It was the first time since Jan. 2 â the Mammoth's season opener against San Jose â that the team was not involved in a one-goal game. Colorado had excelled in the close games, going 5-2 over the stretch of nail-biters, but had expressed the need to put away its opponent quickly. The struggling Storm, which has yet to win a game since relocating from New Jersey before the 2004 season, allowed the Mammoth that opportunity.
Del Halladay and Jay Jalbert each chipped in with two goals for the Mammoth. Jamie Hanford and Gavin Prout rounded out the Colorado scoring with one goal apiece. Chris Seller led the Storm with three goals.
Colorado goaltender Gee Nash improved to 6-2 on the season and made 33 saves. Anaheim goalie Matt Disher made 47 saves and took the loss.
The Storm and Mammoth play the second half of their home-and-home series tomorrow night at 7 at Pepsi Center.
