Mammoth socks it to Storm

Colorado Mammoth News Release

Denver, Colo. – Hundreds of socks, yes socks, littered the field at Pepsi Center Saturday night as Gary Gait scored the final goal of the night – his sixth – in a 17-10 Colorado Mammoth romp over the Anaheim Storm.

A twist on the tradition of throwing hats on the field following a player's third goal, the "sock trick" had been teased for the sellout Pepsi Center crowd of 18,024 should Gait actually hit his sixth goal. With 44 seconds left in the game, he did. Officials penalized the Mammoth with a delay of game call for the amount of time it took to clear the socks. Gait served the penalty.

Gait led the Mammoth – again – with six goals and two assists. He has scored 25 goals in the past five games and all but wrapped up the league's goals and points races with 55 goals and 93 points. It would be his second consecutive and seventh overall goal-scoring title. Buffalo's John Tavares has 46 goals and 85 points with one game left to play.

"I'm not sure who had more fun tonight – the players or the fans," Colorado Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. "This kind of energy is unimaginable and it gets no more wild than this." It was the Mammoth's sixth consecutive sellout, a league record.

Curtis Smith scored a career-high three goals and Del Halladay and Josh Sims each added two goals for the Mammoth. Ben Prepchuk, Brian Langtry, John Wilson and defenseman Dave Stilley added one goal apiece. Langtry led the assists total with six, followed by Brad Self's four. Casey Powell led the Storm with four goals.

The only letdown of the night occurred in the third quarter when forward Gavin Prout left the game with a leg injury. Prout, the NLL's scoring leader with 91 points entering the game, tallied two assists before he was hurt. He left the floor under his own power but did not return.

The Mammoth gave goaltender Gee Nash the night off, starting backup Erik Miller for the third time this season. Miller made 29 saves and earned his second victory of the year. Anaheim goalie Matt Roik made 45 saves and took the loss.

The Mammoth has earned a first-round bye in the Champion's Cup playoffs. Colorado will host the Western Division championship game at Pepsi Center the weekend of April 24-25. Tickets start at $8 and go on sale at noon Wednesday (April 7).
