
Wings Defeat Bandits 17-14 In Final Regular Season Game

BUFFALO, NY - The Philadelphia Wings defeated the Buffalo Bandits 17-14 before 8,537 fans at HSBC Arena. The Wings were eliminated from post-season play last night when they were defeated by the Rochester Knighthawks at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, NY.
The Wings started the game strong with three goals by Andrew Guindon, Brian Tower, and Ryan Ward in the first four minutes of play. The Bandits got their first of the afternoon when Mark Steenhuis scored at 4:45. Dan Marohl scored his first of the game to put the Wings up by three, but the Bandits' John Tavares scored just :30 later to bring the Bandits within two again. Ward scored his second goal of the afternoon for the Wings, which prompted Buffalo to pull goaltender Derek General in favor of Steve Dietrich. The Wings scored two more (Keevin Galbraith and Jeff Ratcliffe) before Buffalo's Andy Ogilvie netted the last goal of the quarter. At the end of the first quarter, the Wings held a 7-3 lead.
It was the Bandits who came out strong in the second quarter with three straight goals (Steenhuis, Jonas Derks, Steenhuis). The Wings built their lead again when Peter Jacobs scored on a breakaway off a face-off and Tom Marechek got his first goal of the afternoon. The Wings' Ratcliffe got his second of the afternoon, followed by a goal by Bandits' rookie A.J. Shannon to give the Wings a 10-7 lead at the half.
The Bandits' Derks had the first goal of the third quarter followed immediately by a hat-trick by the Wings' Ratcliffe. Derks scored again at 6:23 followed by two Wings scored (Tower and Jeff Spano). Jason Clark put in his first of the afternoon for the Bandits followed by Ratcliffe's fourth. At the end of the third quarter, the Wings held a 14-10 lead.
Buffalo battled to within one at the start of the fourth quarter on goals by Roy Colsey and Tavares. But the Wings' Tower and Spencer Martin put the Wings up by two again. A high-sticking penalty by Buffalo goaltender Steve Dietrich brought Derek General back into the game at 9:51. Ogilvie's second of the night for Buffalo was followed by Martin's second of the night for the Wings. The Bandits' Tavares had one final goal, but the Wings held on to pull out a 17-15 win. Third-year Wings' goaltender Nick Schroeder made 40 saves on the night and recorded his first National Lacrosse League win.
Leading the Wings in scoring was Tom Marechek with seven points (1G, 6A) followed by Jeff Ratcliffe with six points (4G, 2A), Ryan Ward with five points (2G, 3A), Dan Marohl with five points (1G, 4A), Brian Tower with five points (3G, 2A), Spencer Martin with three points (2G, 1A), Peter Jacobs and Keevin Galbraith with two points each (1G, 1A) and Andrew Guindon and Jeff Spano with one goal each.
