Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The Mammoth just got bigger. General manager Steve Govett announced on Tuesday that the Colorado Mammoth has signed 6-foot-11, 295-pound defenseman Mike Piwerka to a one-year contract.
Piwerka, a former NCAA basketball player at Boston College and Niagara, is the biggest player ever signed to a National Lacrosse League contract. The 29-year-old native of Oshawa, Ontario, played professionally in Europe and the Continental Basketball Association before turning to indoor lacrosse. He played at the Senior B level of the Ontario Lacrosse Association last summer for the Brooklin Merchants.
"We're very excited to see what this guy can do," Govett said. "He is an exceptional athlete and he's got great feet, which means opposing forwards are going to have a tough time with him. Then you take into account his size and toughness and you realize the potential is there for him to become a top NLL defenseman."
Piwerka is a police officer and lives in Courtice, Ontario, with his wife, Melissa.
