DENVER - Colorado Mammoth players provided a 'Great Escape' for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses and life-altering injuries on Wednesday, teaching the youngsters the game of lacrosse at Bladium Sports & Fitness Club in Denver. More than two dozen participants from Starlight Children's Foundation Colorado received lacrosse tips from the world's best.
"I learned that you have to have really hard power-shots to make it in the goal," said Hannah, an 11-year-old Denver resident.
"When you pick it up, you have to lean down and make sure it doesn't fall out," explained nine-year-old Mari.
"That was awesome!" said Starlight Colorado executive director Tammy Ruden Krause. "Lacrosse is so much fun and learning from the Mammoth players was a blast."
Colorado forwards Adam Jones, Jamie Lincoln, Ilija Gajic and Derek Hopcroft were joined by defensemen Dan Coates and Creighton Reid, and goaltender Dan Lewis.
"Today was a great opportunity to work with young kids and get to know them on a personal level," said Jones, an NLL All-Star. "It was such a wonderful experience to not only teach them, but also learn from them."
"I really enjoyed teaching [the children] a few things about lacrosse and putting smiles on their faces, and those of their families," said Hopcroft. "I had a smile from ear-to-ear, and I'm glad I was a part of it."
A group of children from Starlight cheered on the Mammoth at the team's last home game on February 4. On Wednesday, they took to the turf to learn from their favorite players. As for where the clinic ranked among the cool things 14-year-old Alex has experienced?
"Best one this year!" he said.
The undefeated Mammoth (6-0), off to the team's best start in franchise history, takes on the Calgary Roughnecks this Friday, February 24 at 7pm on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center. Tickets are on sale now at the Pepsi Center box office, all Colorado Dick's Sporting Goods retail kiosks, online at TicketHorse.com, or by calling 303.53.HORSE.
